So Far Away
Jazz Crusaders Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

So far away
Doesn't anybody stay in one place any more?
It would be so fine to see your face at my door
And it doesn't help to know you're just time away
Long ago I reached for you and there you stood
Holding you again would only do me good
Oh how I wish I could but you're so far away
One more song about moving along the highway
I can't say much of anything that's new
But if I could only work this life out my way
I'd rather spend it being close to you

But you're so far away
Doesn't anybody stay in one place any more?
It would be so fine to see your face at my door
And it doesn't help to know you're so far away
So far away, yeah, you're so far away

Traveling around sure gets me down and lonely
Nothing else to do but close my mind
And I sure hope the road don't get to own me
There's so many dreams that I've yet to find

But you're so far away
Doesn't anybody stay in one place any more?
It would be so fine to see your face at my door

And it doesn't help to know you're so far away
So far away, yeah, you're so far away

Overall Meaning

The Jazz Crusaders' song "So Far Away" is a contemplative reflection on the feeling of loneliness and the longing to be reunited with a loved one who is geographically distant. The song begins by posing a question that encapsulates the sense of disconnection experienced by many in the modern era: "Doesn't anybody stay in one place anymore?" The singer expresses his desire to see the face of his loved one at his door, but laments that they are separated by time and space. He reminisces about a time when he was able to hold his beloved, and expresses a wish to be reunited with them once again. Despite the melancholic tone, the singer muses on the idea that life could be different if only he could work it out his way and be close to the person he loves.

The song speaks to the universal human experience of longing for connection and intimacy, and the pain of separation that can accompany distance. It also touches on themes of restlessness and the search for purpose, as the singer grapples with feelings of loneliness and isolation while traveling on the endless highway. Overall, "So Far Away" is a poignant exploration of the human condition that will resonate with anyone who has experienced the sense of being far from home.

The absolute best instrumental ever recoded in my eyes. I was introduced to the Crusaders by my father back in the early 70's. This classic from 1972 is my "go-to" whenever a musical groove is needed to calm the chaos of life. Reminds my of my dad every time I hear it. RIH daddy and thank you for introducing me to jazz, and specifically the Crusaders.
