1) Jenny… Read Full Bio ↴There are at least two artists by the name of Jenny Morris.
1) Jenny Morris OAM is a New Zealand-born Australian pop, rock singer-songwriter. Began singing in the Wide-Mouthed Frogs in the late '70s. She joined The Crocodiles in 1980 and moved to Sydney, Australia, with that band in 1981. The Crocodiles disbanded soon after.
Morris released a number of solo singles as well as an album with QED. The latter produced three singles that were only minor successes in Australia. In 1985, Morris joined INXS as a backing singer for the Listen Like Thieves world tour, before releasing her first solo album (Body & Soul) in 1987. The disc was a success, selling over 70,000 copies in Australia (platinum status), and produced a number of hit singles, including "You I Know," written by Neil Finn.
Her second album, Shiver, consolidated her position as one of Australia's leading female singer/songwriters by selling over 250,000 copies, although her third disc (Break in the Weather) was a comparative flop, producing one hit single plus two others that missed the Top 40 completely. The Story So Far, a best-of compilation, was released in 1992, but the rest of the '90s saw little of note from Morris, apart from an album called Salvation Jane in 1995.
The appropriately titled single “Downtime” arrived in 2002 with the album Hit & Myth following later that year.
In January 2003, on Australia Day became an Australian citizen.
In 2004 Listen: The Very Best of Jenny Morris was released, with the Alive DVD landing in 2005. A year later, Clear Blue in Stormy Skies appeared, filled with acoustic versions of some of the singer’s most popular songs.
In January 2010, on Australia Day received Australian of the Year.
2) Jenny Morris, later to join the pop girl group Innosense in 1999, released a country album, Girl on the Run in 1997.
Street of Love
Jenny Morris Lyrics

A rich girl given favours
All the world, at my feet
And its many different flavours
I sucked it all dry, now I realise
I'm a beggar on the street of love
I'm a beggar on the street of love
All the rest have no charm
There's nothing they can give me
What I want makes me poor
In this great big world of plenty
I'm holding out my cup
Only you can fill it up
I'm a beggar on the street of love
I'm a beggar on the street of love
I'm a beggar on the street of love
I'm a beggar on the street of love
Beggar on the street of love
In the rain I'm standing trying to see
And my heart keeps calling
Calling out for you to see
You look right through me and you pass me by
Take my hand, lead me to
Your loving milk and honey
Lay me down, keep me from
The night so cold and rainy
Please, I'm down on my knees
I'm a beggar on the street of love
I'm a beggar on the street of love
I'm a beggar on the street of love
I'm a beggar on the street of love
The lyrics of "Street of Love" by Jenny Morris delve into themes of self-realization, vulnerability, and the transcendent power of love. The singer reflects on their past experiences of privilege and indulgence, symbolized by being "a rich girl given favours" and having "the world at [their] feet." However, as they grow older and wiser, they come to the profound realization that they have depleted all the superficial pleasures and luxuries that the world had to offer them. This acknowledgment leads the singer to see themselves as a metaphorical "beggar on the street of love," signifying a profound sense of spiritual emptiness and a yearning for deeper, more meaningful connections.
The contrast between material wealth and emotional poverty is further explored in the second verse, where the singer recognizes that despite living in a world of abundance, they feel destitute inside. In a society that values external possessions and superficial gestures, the singer yearns for something more genuine and soul-nourishing. This longing is encapsulated in the poignant plea, "I'm holding out my cup, only you can fill it up," highlighting the singer's belief that true fulfillment can only be found through authentic love and connection.
The imagery of standing in the rain, reaching out for love, and feeling invisible to those around them conveys a sense of isolation and longing for understanding and affection. Despite their efforts to convey their innermost feelings and desires, the singer feels overlooked and unacknowledged by others. This emotional vulnerability is palpable as they express a heartfelt plea for companionship and solace, symbolized by the metaphorical "loving milk and honey" that they seek to find in another person's embrace.
Ultimately, the chorus of the song, with its repeated refrain of "I'm a beggar on the street of love," echoes the singer's profound sense of humility, vulnerability, and yearning for a love that transcends material possessions and societal expectations. Through powerful and evocative imagery, Jenny Morris captures the universal human experience of seeking love, connection, and emotional fulfillment amidst a world that often values superficiality and material gain. "Street of Love" invites listeners to reflect on the essence of true happiness and fulfillment, reminding us that love, compassion, and empathy are the richest treasures that can fill our emotional cups and warm our hearts on the coldest nights.
