In the Bleak Midwinter
Jerry Douglas Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

In the bleak mid-winter frosty winds made moan
Earth stood hard as iron, water like a stone
Snow had fallen, snow on snow, snow on snow
In the bleak mid-winter, long ago

Angels and archangels may have gathered there
Cherubim and seraphim thronged the air
But His mother only, in her maiden's bliss
Worshiped the beloved with a kiss

Oh what can I give him, poor as I am
If I were a shepherd, would I bring a lamb
If I were a wise man, would I do my part
Yet what can I give him, give my heart

In the bleak mid-winter frosty winds made moan
Earth stood hard as iron, water like a stone

If I were a wise man, would I do my part
Yet what can I give him, give my heart

Overall Meaning

Jerry Douglas's song In The Bleak Midwinter is a beautiful rendition of Christina Rossetti's famous poem. The lyrics describe the harshness of mid-winter, as frosty winds moan and the earth becomes as hard as iron, with water frozen like stone. The repeated phrase "snow on snow" paints a picture of a landscape buried in shimmering white snow. The second stanza turns to a more spiritual theme, imagining the possibility of angels, archangels, cherubim, and seraphim gathered in this bleak mid-winter landscape. However, the only person present to worship the beloved is his mother, who does so with a kiss. The final stanza brings the focus back to the individual, with a contemplation of what they can offer the beloved. The singer wonders what they could give, stating that even if they were a shepherd to bring a lamb or a wise man to do their part, it wouldn't be enough. Ultimately, the singer concludes that the only thing they can give the beloved is their heart.
