The Birds And The Bees
Jewel Akens Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

Let me tell ya 'bout the birds and the bees
And the flowers and the trees
And the moon up above
And a thing called love

Let me tell ya 'bout the stars in the sky
And a girl and a guy
And the way they could kiss
On a night like this

When I look into your big brown eyes
It's so very plain to see
That it's time you learned about the facts of life
Starting from A to Z

Let me tell ya 'bout the birds and the bees
And the flowers and the trees
And the moon up above
And a thing called love (yeah)

When I look into your big brown eyes
It's so very plain to see
That it's time you learned about the facts of life
Starting from A to Z

Let me tell ya 'bout the birds and the bees
And the flowers and the trees
And the moon up above
And a thing called love

Let me tell ya 'bout the birds and the bees
And the flowers and the trees
And the birds and the bees
And the flowers and the trees

'Bout the birds
And the bees

Overall Meaning

"The Birds and The Bees" by Jewel Akens is a classic song that tells the story of a young man trying to teach his girlfriend about love and the facts of life. The lyrics refer to the beauty of nature, such as the birds, bees, flowers, and trees, and how they relate to love and the romantic relationship between a man and woman. As the song progresses, the young man expresses his love to his girlfriend by telling her about the stars in the sky, the way a boy and girl could kiss on a moonlit night, and the need to understand the facts of life.

The lyrics are cleverly crafted to juxtapose the beauty of nature with the complexity of human relationships. The chorus repeats the idea of "let me tell ya 'bout the birds and the bees" to emphasize the importance of understanding what love and relationships are about. The lyrics capture the innocence and naivety of young love while also hinting at the more mature themes of sex and reproduction.

I don't condone marriage in this day and age, but if it works then I'm on with it. My great aunt and uncle used to play this song, among others, everywhere they went in the 90's. This was when they used to take all of us kids out to movies and shows at the time. Good times.

My grandmother used to always sing me this song to annoy me, but I secretly loved it. We lost her to cancer in January, and the last few days she was on hospice and she had completely shut down and stopped talking, I would sing her this song, even though I’d never heard the real version. Now I listen to this song all the time. RIP Mimi❀️
