One Rainy Wish
Jimi Hendrix Experience Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

Gold and rose, the color of the dream I had
Not too long ago
A misty blue and the lilac too
A never to grow old

There you were under the tree of song
Sleeping so peacefully
In your hand a flower played
A waiting there for me

I have never
Laid eyes on you
Not like this before
This timeless day
A but you walked and ya ha
Once smiled my name
And you stole
My heart away
A stole my heart away little girl, yeah
All right

Gold and rose the color of the dream I had
Not too long ago
Misty blue and lilac too
A never to grow old

Gold and rose the color of the dream I had
Misty blue and lilac too
Gold and rose the color of the dream I had
Misty blue and lilac too
Gold and rose, gold and rose, gold and rose

It's only a dream
I'd love to tell somebody about this dream
The sky was filled with a thousand stars
While the sun kissed the mountains blue
And eleven moons played across the rainbows

Above me and you
Gold and rose the color of the velvet walls surround us

Overall Meaning

The lyrics to Jimi Hendrix Experience's song, One Rainy Wish, are both vibrant and dreamlike. The colors of gold and rose are a representation of the dream the singer had not too long ago, which is a perfect and timeless day. The colors misty blue and lilac represent the beauty, tranquility and never-growing-old essence of the dream.

The idealized dream proceeds with a peaceful representation of the significant other or love interest of the singer, who was sleeping under a tree of song. The lyrics indicate that the person is holding a flower, almost waiting for the other person, the singer, to arrive. The mysterious and charming aspect of the dream is given another layer, as the singer says "I have never laid eyes on you, not like this before." The encounter turns out to be fate, with the other person smiling the singer's name, taking the singer’s heart, and stealing it little by little.

Throughout the song, it's difficult to perceive whether the events are happening in real life or in the singer's dream. Nevertheless, the poetical imagery of the lyrics creates a romantic and vivid story. The song, One Rainy Wish, can be interpreted in many different ways, but it ultimately conveys a yearning for something that seems impossible to achieve.

Dear Hendrix Family,
Greed will get you nowhere. In fact, it’s holding you back. Jimi’s timeless music is so hard/expensive to access that millions of young fans are missing out on it. Jimi’s music belongs to the universe. Give it to the universe and the riches you seek will follow.
Greed will get you nowhere.

Jimi Hendrix is slowly fading from popular consciousness because of how his music is hoarded. All that IP is going to depreciate hard if they keep it all under wraps.

@hesch-tag

My thoughts exactly.

@soultosqueeze1853

I feel and understand your irritation. I'm 30 and his music has had a tremendous impact on my life and am willing to go to any practical lengths to have his art close by. At this time in my life I no longer judge how his family has managed his legacy. From my own experience with ruining opportunities and sacrificing my future mental and spiritual wellbeing to gratify myself in the moment I am mindful of the hurt I caused myself and others and the multitude of souls that didn't get the chance to live through the war and see the otherside. Obviously there is a negative impact from him losing his life so young. I put my blame on his lack of thinking and the "lady' who was with him at that moment.

@mingmonk

Go pay for it. If there’s any reason he’s fading in popularity, which he is not as long as someone has a guitar In their hands. It’s because people want it for free and are pissed off they can’t have it. I mean you’ll pay $5 for a coffee drink every day but you won’t drop whatever the cost on your so called favorite artist?

@Taipan66

@mingmonk I don’t think that is what OP is saying. Of course established Jimi fans will own the vinyl/CDs of his music, but the vast majority of people don’t listen to or discover music that way any more and this is what Jimi’s step sister doesn’t understand or cares to understand. Rick Beato made a video on this very topic and showed how Jimi’s musical legacy is fading into obscurity with the casual audience and modern culture compared to say Queen or The Beatles where the rights holders very much understand how music and music culture is consumed now a days
