He Washed My Eyes With Tears
Jimmy Swaggart Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

He washed my eyes with tears
That I might see.
The broken heart I had was good for me.
He tore it all apart
And looked inside.
And found it full of fear,
So much foolish pride
He swept away the things
That made me blind.
And then I saw the clouds
Were silver light.
And now I understand
'Twas best for me.
He washed my eyes with tears
That I might see.

He washed my eyes with tears
That I might see
The glory of Himself
Revealed to me
I did not know that day
That He had wounded hands
Until I saw the marks and the blood That was spilled on the sand

I saw the marks of shame and wept Lord and I cried
He was my Substitute
for me He died.
And now I'm glad He came
So tenderly
And washed my eyes with tears
that I might see
And washed my eyes with tears...

That I might see
(I might see).

Overall Meaning

The lyrics of this song by Jimmy Swaggart convey a powerful spiritual message that reflects on the transformative power of God's love and grace. The song starts off by saying that God washed the singer's eyes with tears for them to be able to see. This seems somewhat paradoxical at first as tears usually blur our vision, but the tears here are metaphorical, signifying the spiritual awakening the singer experienced after going through a tough time.

The next few lines talk about how the singer's broken heart was necessary for their spiritual growth as it forced them to examine themselves and see the fear and foolish pride that resided within. God tore apart their heart and brought out the hidden things that were making them blind to the beauty and goodness in the world.

The line "And then I saw the clouds were silver light" seems to suggest that the singer was finally able to see the world in a new light, a more beautiful and radiant form. They were able to understand that the challenges and struggles they experienced were all part of a greater plan that God had in store for them. The last few lines talk about how the singer finally understood the true meaning of Christ's sacrifice and how it was a substitute for their transgressions.

Overall, this song is a reflection of the transformation that can happen when we open ourselves up to God's love and allow Him to break us down and rebuild us anew.

I met someone last week , who was healed in a Jimmy swaggart crusade. He had no joints or hip bones and could not walk without his legs flying backwards up to his ears. One of 13 people in the world born with this disease. He was miraculously healed at the crusade in Dayton Ohio in 1977. His doctor who was an atheist became a Christian due to the profound miracle of this young boy who is now in his mid 40's. Glory be to God.His mother led the doctor to the Lord just as Jimmy prophesied he would..Word for word everything exactly came to pass.
