Aren't You Glad You're You
Jimmy Van Heusen Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

(verse)
do you make the most of your five senses,
Or is your life like Old Mother Hubbard's shelf?
Well, mark this on your slate,
Life is not an empty plate.
That's if you appreciate yourself.

(refrain)
Ev'ry time you're near a rose,
Aren't you glad you've got a nose?
And if the dawn is fresh with dew,
Aren't you glad you're you?
When a meadowlark appears,
Aren't you glad you've got two ears?
And if your heart is singing, too,
Aren't you glad you're you?
You can see a summer sky,
Or touch a friendly hand,
Or taste an apple pie.
Pardon the grammar, but ain't life grand?
And when you wake up each morn,
Aren't you glad that you were born?

Think what you've got the whole day through,
Aren't you glad you're you?

Overall Meaning

The song "Aren't You Glad You're You" by Jimmy Van Heusen celebrates the joy of being alive and having our senses to experience the beauty around us. The first verse poses a question to the listener about whether they are taking advantage of their five senses or if their life is empty like Mother Hubbard's cupboard. The following lines suggest that if we appreciate ourselves, our lives are not empty but rather full of wonderful experiences. The refrain highlights several examples of things that we should be happy about, such as smelling roses with our nose or listening to a meadowlark with our ears. The song emphasizes that life is grand and something to be grateful for each day.

The lyrics and sentiment of "Aren't You Glad You're You" have made the song a popular choice for films and television shows, including the classic Christmas movie "It's a Wonderful Life." The song fits well with the movie's themes of appreciating life and finding joy in the little things. In the movie, the song is played as the characters are celebrating George Bailey's life and realizing how important he is to the people around him.

I certainly am Bing, it’s the simple things ❤

@Trombonology

This Decca side is a far cry from the film version, with just Bing singing to his own faked piano accompaniment. Johnny Burke's folksy lyric is quite a contrast to Van Heusen's fairly sophisticated harmonic structure, but somehow the two opposites work together. And however different the real Bing may have been from Father Chuck O'Malley, he sure knew how to convey breezy optimism, as we may appreciate here.
