Can't Handle the Truth
JoJo Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

[Verse 1:]
You knew something was scandalous
You told me you could handle it
But if I told you everything you wouldn't believe me
It’s someone that you met before
You even shook his hand at the door
It was last 4th of July when we got into that big fight
You seemed more concerned with the girls by the pool
He held my conversation, something you don’t do
You left me vulnerable; so irresponsible
Why are you confused?

[Bridge:]
If you could handle the truth I'd never lie to you
If you did what you’re supposed to do I’d still be with you
You’re so busy loving yourself there’s no room for anyone else (but the
Truth is)
If you could handle the truth I’d never

[Chorus:]
I would never lie never lie never lie
But you don’t even try even try even try
I hate lying to you but you can’t handle the truth
I would never lie never lie never lie
But you don’t even try even try even try
I hate lying to you but you can’t handle the truth

[Verse 2:]
I’m so fucking mad at you
Look at what you made me do
You turned a good girl so bad and it’s all your fault
But you couldn't give a little love
Your affection would have been enough
But now I’m the one up in the club and I’m leaving my phone off
Which brings me back to that day by the pool
He invited me out something you used to do
Wanted to tell you but deep down I knew
Your ego’s so big that it might leave you bruised

[Bridge:]
If you could handle the truth I'd never lie to you
If you did what you’re supposed to do I’d still be with you
You’re so busy loving yourself there’s no room for anyone else (I just
Don't belong here)

[Chorus:]

Overall Meaning

In the song “Can’t Handle the Truth” by JoJo, the artist expresses her frustration with her partner who is unable to handle the truth. The lyrics suggest that the singer has something scandalous to tell her partner, but she holds it back because she knows he wouldn't believe her. She reveals that her partner was more interested in other girls during a fight they had on the last 4th of July. Meanwhile, another man held a conversation with her, something her partner never did. This left her vulnerable and angry with her partner's irresponsibility. She thinks her partner's big ego could harm their relationship, and if he could handle the truth, she wouldn't have to lie to him.

The second verse of the song conveys the artist's anger and hurt towards her partner. She blames him for turning a good girl bad and failing to give her the love and affection she deserves. Despite her efforts, she couldn't make him understand. The artist confesses that someone invited her to the club, and she wanted to tell her partner but decided not to because of his ego. His selfishness makes her feel like she doesn't belong with him.

People are really missing out man. I had somebody tell me I'm gay because I'm a black male and was listening to this. Lmao this is exactly why she's so under appreciated.

Never experienced anything like that from people who knew my tastes as far as female artists but I bet that's what a simp would say, hiding their own insecurities because they know deep down whatever they into it ain't satisfying or good enough, Jojo always felt really tomboy and urban, I don't know how dudes wouldn't be listening or falling for that

For me hip-hop and R&B are my favourite music genres and they basically the male-female equivalents for me, Jojo was always my favourite artist on the R&B side and Eminem is my favourite rapper from the hip-hop side

Bored Nerd

WTF 😂😂 Do people understand what "gay" even means anymore?

Daniel Almir
