Marvin's Room
JoJo Feat. Drake Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

Hello?
I'm out right now
Just, just been drinking with Jack
What are you doing? I miss you
You wanna come over?
Who you with? Hello?

I've been up three days
Adderall and Red Bull
This call is a mistake
There's something strong in this water bottle
I hear you got a new chick
A dancing little Barbie doll
I feel so pathetic
But you still haven't heard it all

Fuck that new girl that you like so bad
She's not crazy like me, I bet you like that
I said, fuck that new girl that's been in your bed
And when you're in her I know I'm in your head
(Are you drunk right now?)
I'm just saying, you can do better
Always turned you out every time we were together
(You know I didn't mean that)
Once you had the best, boy, you can't do better
(You should come over, what are you doing?)
Baby, I'm the best, so you can't do better

Oh, oh, whoa
(Right)

I ran into your homeboys
They're all fucking idiots
You're not even my boyfriend
But they're trippin' 'cause I'm in the club
Yeah, that's right, I'm dancing
And something cool is in my cup
I'ma send a sexy picture
To remind you what you've given up

Fuck that new girl that you like so bad
She's not crazy like me, I bet you like that
I said, fuck that new girl that's been in your bed
And when you're in her I know I'm in your head
(Right)
I mean, I'm just saying, you can do better
Always turned you out every time we were together
Once you had the best, boy, you can't do better
Baby, I'm the best, so you can't do better

(Baby, I'm the best, so you can't do better)
No, you can't do better
Oh, oh
Na-na-na-na-na-na, right, yeah

Oh, mm
(Right)

Overall Meaning

The song Marvin's Room by JoJo feat. Drake is a conversation between two people who have previously been in a romantic relationship with one another. As the song starts, the female character answers a phone call from her ex, who is clearly drunk and delirious. He tells her that he's been out clubbing all night, but he can't stop thinking about her. He says he knows that she's happy with a good guy, but he's still going to call her anyway. The male character, who is the ex, then takes over where the conversation becomes a bit more intense, as he tells her to forget about the guy she's with right now because they had something special. He then asks if she's heard that she could do better lately.

As the song progresses, the male character continues to reveal more about his life at present. He explains that he's been drinking and can't stop thinking about the woman he's calling, despite the fact that she's moved on. He tells her that he's been with several women this week and that he's "having a hard time adjusting to fame." He then apologizes for calling her, saying that he's talking crazy, and asking if she's still listening or if she's going to hang up. In the final moments of the song, the female character responds, telling the male character that she'll stay on the phone, but that she's not going to come over.

The lyrics of Marvin's Room are powerful, as they speak to the deep emotions and insecurities that still exist between two people who have shared an intense relationship. The song touches on themes such as love, heartbreak, vulnerability, and addiction. The male character's alcohol consumption and his willingness to call his ex despite her being in a committed relationship also speak to feelings of desperation and loneliness that can arise when a relationship ends.

The singer has been drinking RosΓ© and has a list of old love interests on their phone. They consider calling one of them, but acknowledge that she is happy with someone else. However, they are so drunk that they will call her anyway to express their feelings.

Fuck that nigga that you love so bad I know you still think about the times we had
The artist tells the woman they want to call to forget about the man she loves, as he knows she still thinks about their past.

I say fuck that nigga that you think you found And since you picked up, I know he's not around, oh oh
The artist dismisses the new man that the woman is supposedly with, because she picked up her phone, implying that he is not around her at the moment.

(Are you drunk right now?) I'm just sayin' you could do better Tell me, have you heard that lately? I'm just sayin' you could do better And I'll start hatin' only if you make me
The artist tells the woman that she could do better than the man she is with, and asks if she has been told that. They also add that they will only hate him if she does not listen.

Uh, cups of that XO All my people been here I see all of her friends here Guess she don't have the time to kick it no more Flight's in the morning What you doin' that's so important?
The singer has been drinking XO and is surrounded by their friends. They notice the woman's friends at the event, but speculate that she has no time to spend with them anymore. They ask what she is doing that is so important as her flight is in the morning.

I think I'm addicted to naked pictures And sitting talking 'bout bitches that we almost had I don't think I'm conscious of makin' monsters Outta the women I sponsor 'til it all goes bad But, shit, it's all good
The singer confesses to being addicted to nude pictures and discussing past love interests that almost became a reality. They do not believe they are aware of how their actions affect the women they sponsor, but do not think it is all that bad.

We threw a party, yeah, we threw a party Bitches came over, yeah, we threw a party I was just calling, 'cause they were just leavin' Talk to me, please, don't have much to believe in I need you right now, are you down to listen to me? Too many drinks have been given to me I got some women that's livin' off me Paid for their flights and hotels, I'm ashamed Bet that you know them, I won't say no names After a while, girl, they all seem the same I've had sex four times this week, I'll explain Havin' a hard time adjustin' to fame Sprite in that mixture I've been talkin' crazy, girl, I'm lucky that you picked up Lucky that you stayed on I need someone to put this weight on "Fuck, I'm sorry"
The singer describes throwing a party and having various women over as guests. They were calling since the women were leaving and they feel lonely, having no one else to believe in. Too many drinks have been given to the singer, and some women are financially dependent on them (which they feel guilty about). They confirm that the woman on the phone knows of these women, but do not want to reveal any names. The singer explains that all women tend to be the same to them, and admits to having had sex multiple times that week. They find it challenging to adjust to fame, and confirm that Sprite was in the alcoholic mixture, making them talk crazy. The singer is lucky that the woman on the phone picked up and stayed on, as they need someone to share their emotional burden with. They apologize for their behavior.

(Are you drunk right now?) I'm just sayin' you could do better Tell me, have you heard that lately? I'm just sayin' you could do better And I'll start hatin' only if you make me
The artist repeats their point about how the woman can do better and asks if she has heard that recently. They add that they will only begin to hate her if she ignores their advice.

You not gonna come? I guess I'm 'bout to just, kick it here then
The artist asks if the woman on the phone is not going to come over, and resigns to staying where they are.

Just throw up while I hold your hair back Her white friend said, "You niggas crazy" I hope no one heard that, yeah I hope no one heard that 'Cause if they did, we gon' be in some trouble, yeah If they did we gon' be in some trouble, trouble Oh, oh, oh, ohh
The singer offers to help the woman throw up, and hears her white friend say that they are crazy. They express concern that someone may have heard and that they could be in trouble.
