Up Where We Belong
Joe Cocker; Jennifer Warnes Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

Who knows what tomorrow brings
In a world few hearts survive
All I know is the way I feel
When it's real, I keep it alive

The road is long
There are mountains in our way
But we climb a step every day

Love lift us up where we belong
Where the eagles cry
On a mountain high
Love lift us up where we belong
Far from the world below
Up where the clear winds blow

Some hang on to used to be
Live their lives looking behind
All we have is here and now
All our lives, out there to find

The road is long
There are mountains in our way
But we climb a step every day

Love lift us up where we belong
Where the eagles cry
On a mountain high
Love lift us up where we belong
Far from the world we know
Where the clear winds blow

Time goes by
No time to cry
Life's you and I
Alive today

Love lift us up where we belong
Where the eagles cry
On a mountain high
Love lift us up where we belong
Far from the world we know
Where the clear winds blow

Love lift us up where we belong
Where the eagles cry

On a mountain high
Love lift us up where we belong

My siblings and I first heard this song in the 1980s when we were young growing up in Nigeria. It was on one of the local radios and the rich voices and tone of the total music just got into our spirits and made us cry. Yes we didn't understand or total hear the full words but those we hears were more than enough to hold us captivated.

For days we would have our little transistor radio turned to the station hoping the song would be played again but it wasn't for a long time. We didn't know who the singers were as some of us thought it was kenny Rogers (he was popular in Nigeria then) and Dolly parton (she was also popular). Then one cool evening after we already gave up any hope of hearing the song again. The radio dj said: "due to popular demands from listeners who have written countless letters requesting for this song to be played again, so we going to play it twice back to back". Our elder brother said it got to be that song so he grabbed his Sonny Walkman with cassette in it that could record and placed it by the speaker of our transistor radio. We all kept quiet and waited. The moment the song started he pressed the record button and we had it recorded. To us it felt like we had conquered the world. We were sooooo full of joy. And we played it almost everyday and for no reason it would make us cry. But on that day we realized it was the songers we thought we knew but two lovely voices unknown to our part of the world.

I haven't heard of this song for over 30 years until now but it still makes me cry even as a grown up man.

For real the mountains might be rough to climb but we climb a step by step

Their voices is like mixing lovely cream and chocolate to produce very rich tea.
Thanks to the two of them for bringing so much joy and love to a world like ours.

Lost my dad recently. A week before he passed he heard the chorus of this song in his head. He said he didn't know why, he hadn't heard it since childhood. Shortly later he passed. Love lifted him up where he belonged. Later that evening we saw his face in the clouds. Welcome home dad... I love you
