Biography
Joel Sarakula is a singer with band who writes and performs retro-pop songs at the piano and guitar. Born in Sydney, Australia, and now based in London, he releases his debut album The Golden Age on 17 June, 2013, following a flurry of UK radio support for his singles Bohemian and I Will Deliver which racked up generous plays across BBC 6, BBC London, XFM, Q Radio and Absolute.
The Golden Age has been a long time coming for Sarakula, a songwriter who has travelled the world in search of his muse, experiencing everything from Caribbean car-jackings to performing in the remote fishing villages of Norway, via the dive bars of Europe and the US. It was the hodge-podge musical tapestry of England’s capital that finally drew Sarakula to a settling point, in the wake of seemingly never ending run of shows that saw his tour three Australian-only albums 'Mystery Morning', 'Souvenirs' and 'City Heart'.

Understanding
Joel Sarakula Lyrics
Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴ Line by Line Meaning ↴
And your way ain't clear
Here's the land spent trough the day
On confusion road
You're sittin' way alone
Be careful you don't melt away
The Sun is tired now
You better cool it down
Nighttime's fallin' all we need is Understanding
Just one touch the evening is so Undemanding
On the street today
I had a rough exchange
With an educated man
I guess he ran the books
But take another look
He thinks that he knows who I am
We might be different now
But in another hour
City lights will come stay our angry hands
Nighttime's fallin' all we need is Understanding
Just one touch the evening is so Undemanding
Nighttime's fallin' all we need is Understanding
Some understanding
Some understanding
Some understanding
You caught me in your gaze
Broke my summer days
We fight to keep ourselves under control
Let's find a place to go
where our love can grow
I wanna share a bit of soul
Nighttime's fallin' oh, oh-oh
Just one touch and oh, oh-oh
Nighttime's fallin' oh, oh-oh
Just one touch and oh, oh-oh
The song "Understanding" by Joel Sarakula is an emotive piece that speaks about the need for human connection and understanding. The song highlights the struggles and confusion that often come with the uncertainty of life, the difficulties in relationships, and the misunderstandings that can arise between people.
The opening lines, "When it's hard to hear and your way ain't clear" sets the tone for the song's theme, as the singer addresses the challenges of life and relationships. In the verse, he describes someone sitting alone on "confusion road," a metaphorical representation of the feeling of being lost and confused. He advises the person to relax and "cool down" before they "melt away" in the heat of their emotions. The chorus emphasizes the need for understanding, as the singer affirms that all we need is one touch of understanding to make the evening soothing and undemanding. He underscores the point by repeating the chorus and saying "some understanding" three times.
In the second verse, the singer describes an unpleasant encounter with an educated man who thinks he knows who he is. But he points out that the city lights will come and calm their angry hands, suggesting that in the end, we all need each other no matter how different we may seem. In the final verse, the singer addresses his lover, acknowledging that they are both struggling but reassures her that they can find a place to grow their love and share their souls.
Overall, the song is an appeal for empathy, connection, and compassion. It reminds us that understanding is critical to relationships, and we need to make efforts to bridge gaps and connect with the people around us.

When it's hard to hear
In times when situations are tough to comprehend
And your way ain't clear
When the path ahead is unknown
Here's the land spent trough the day
The familiarity and weariness of a place after spending a whole day there
On confusion road
The mental confusion that comes with uncertainty
You're sittin' way alone
The loneliness that comes with being unsure of what lies ahead
Be careful you don't melt away
Be cautious of not letting the pressure get to you
The Sun is tired now
The day has ended and the need to relax sets in
You better cool it down
It's important to calm down and relax in such moments
It's time we all came out to play
It's time to take chances and have fun in life
On the street today
During a walk in the city
I had a rough exchange
I had a difficult encounter
With an educated man
With someone who's learned
I guess he ran the books
He is well-read
But take another look
However, there's more to him than meets the eye
He thinks that he knows who I am
He has an impression of me, but it may not be true
We might be different now
Our differences should not prevent us from reaching a common ground
But in another hour
Given time, we may start to see things from each other's perspectives
City lights will come stay our angry hands
We will realize that we share more than what divides us
You caught me in your gaze
I am drawn to you
Broke my summer days
You've made a significant impact on my life
We fight to keep ourselves under control
We try hard not to let our emotions get the better of us
Let's find a place to go
Let's explore the possibilities that lie ahead
where our love can grow
A place where our affection and understanding for each other can develop and flourish
I wanna share a bit of soul
I want to connect with you on a deeper level
Nighttime's fallin'
As darkness approaches
all we need is Understanding
All we need is empathy and comprehension for each other
Just one touch the evening is so Undemanding
A simple act of kindness can make the rest of the night peaceful
Some understanding
We need some compassion and empathy from each other
