Look At Me
John Canaan Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

Look At Me
Who knows the hour. Who knows the day... when I'll be taken, so far away. The here and now, like grains of sand, between my fingers and through my hands. Look at me, while you can. Touch every page as it's turning. Look at me- here I am- while there's time- while we can. Look how we run to what's ahead, to build our future- secure our lives. But in this day, I've missed your face, shining beside me- this light that guides me. Look at me, while you can. Touch every page as it's turning. Look at me- here I am- while there's time- while we can. When will tomorrow begin? Maybe my heart will be with you then. But now I can love you my friend. Now is the time. Now is the time. In this day- this ordinary day- take my hand, walk my way, and... Look at me, while you can. Touch every page as it's turning.

Overall Meaning

John Canaan's song Look at Me presents a message of cherishing every moment we have with those we love before it is too late. As Canaan starts off by saying, "Who knows the hour, who knows the day...when I'll be taken, so far away," he emphasizes the uncertainty of life and how quickly it can be taken away. The powerlessness of human beings in controlling their time on earth is vividly described in the second line where he says- "when I'll be taken so far away." In the third and fourth lines, Canaan speaks about the transience of life and how it is slipping by like grains of sand through our fingers. He urges the audience to look at him directly as if to draw the listeners' attention to the importance of living in the present moment.

Canaan uses the phrase "Look at me while you can" repetitively throughout the song to express a sense of urgency. He urges his listeners first to see him, to behold the moment and enjoy every second while it lasts. He tells them to touch every page as it turns and hold onto the present as it quickly becomes the past. The fifth line of the song emphasizes the fact that we always worry about tomorrow and what it might hold, but are we making the most of today? The lyrics continue with Canaan expressing that he has missed sharing his experiences and life with someone who is dear to him. He acknowledges how they are his light that guides him, and he wished he had spent more time by their side.

The chorus repeats many times to create the impression that this sense of urgency that Canaan emphasizes repeatedly is something that everyone should take note of- "Look at me, while you can. Touch every page as it's turning. Look at me- here I am- while there's time- while we can."

If it was Carole's life insurance it might be worthy of attention but it wasn't. It was his own life insurance.

No evidence exists to prove he killed Carole. She has never been found. Neither has Suzy.

There are so many links between him and Suzy. It feels amazing that he has not been held responsible. There is even evidence that him and Suzy have been in a car that he drove but they say that there is no proof that they were in there at the same time. What a massive coincidence it would be if they were both in there separately by chance. I am sure people have been found guilty with less evidence. I am sure he is responsible. But will he ever say where the body is? I highly doubt it.

EDIT: I first thought he seemed normal but I zoomed in. He mostly looks down. He only briefly shows a flash of his eyes and they look cold despite his friendly demeanour.

He was a used car salesman, but he tries to sound like he's a international entrepreneur/philanthropist/business guru.

Da_great_mogul

@Simon Yip haha. Weirdly he's a lot like my father that also has a high opinion of himself and is also a car salesman.

Omg. I suppose if he just said โ€œIโ€™m a Loserโ€ he wouldnโ€™t of got his 3 minutes worth of tape time.

The dating company who made this video never realeased it, they felt there was something not quite right about this guy, well they got that right, never be afraid to trust your gut instinct.

James Jameson

I find that hard to believe, they were in the business of making money, they didn't know anything about him, they could not be that laser precision intuitive

Suz P

Yes I saw that too. Obviously they spent more time with him than just this video so probably picked up on other things that made them uneasy. Hard to imagine the feelings of the woman who interviewed him here, finding out who he really was.

burles

Thatโ€™s what they said later when he was caught, but they would, wouldnโ€™t they. Theyโ€™d like to be seen as intuitive as anything else would feel like guilt. Itโ€™s a privileged middle class young woman interviewing him, I donโ€™t think she would have had such street smart skill as to know anything about the real him. By this time, he was already very well practiced in his charm and he would have been on best behaviour as he wanted to go on dates. If he had had dates through here, he probably wouldnโ€™t have attacked, as the video/paper trail was too easy to find. I bet off camera, he was just as he is here, and they were as fooled as anyone who met him socially elsewhere
