Love Doesn't Last
John Entwistle Lyrics

(J. Entwistle)

Two names on a screwed up piece of paper
Two smiles on a photograph, two souls living as one,
So easy to tear apart

There's no fool like a young fool
Ain't no school can teach you that cool
Ain't no love like your first love
It's gets you here in your heart

I never thought it could end like this
With my back against the wall, so tall
Make me wish that the first kiss never happened at all
You knew from the start, right here in your heart
That love doesn't last right here in your heart

Forever after is a long long time,
But the happy ones are blind to the kind of deal they sign
When your life is on the line
Now the words have all been said and the tears have all been shed
And the lawyers fly in lazy circles up above your head

But you still got your heart, they can't take you heart
You knew from the start, that love doesn't last
Right here in your heartâ?¦. Come on and lose it againâ?¦.
There's no fool like a young fool
Ain't no school can teach you that kind of cool
Ain't no love like your first love
It's gets you here in your heart

You should have listen, to your heart
You should have listen, to your heart

Overall Meaning

John Entwistle's Love Doesn't Last is a song about two people who fell in love and started a life together but ended up getting a divorce. The song talks about the pain and the heartbreak that comes with separation. The first stanza opens up with "Two names on a screwed up piece of paper, Two smiles on a photograph, two souls living as one, So easy to tear apart" presenting the disillusionment of their marriage. He goes on to say "Ain't no love like your first love, It's gets you here in your heart" highlighting the significance of the first love that brought them together. The chorus ends with "That love doesn't last right here in your heart", emphasizing that not all love lasts forever and some relationships may lead to endings.

The second verse draws in on the thoughts and feelings that come when everything falls apart. The line "Make me wish that the first kiss never happened at all" portrays the heartache and the feeling of regret that comes when love ends. The third verse encourages listeners to learn from the mistake of falling in love too fast without considering the long-term consequences. It brings home the point that one ought to listen to their heart before committing themselves to love hoping to draw a lesson.

I did read that the original master tapes were confiscated by the FBI and the record had to be re recorded. The singer is from the canadian band PRISM and Zak plays drums.

@Germán Morales Agreed! Years ago, I found an outtake version on here of 'Love Doesn't Last' with John on vocals, but it's gone now. Shame, because it was great.
