Have You Ever Seen the Rain
John Fogerty Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

Someone told me long ago
There's a calm before the storm,
I know; it's been comin' for some time.
When it's over, so they say,
It'll rain a sunny day,
I know; shinin' down like water.

I want to know, have you ever seen the rain?
I want to know, have you ever seen the rain
Comin' down on a sunny day?

Yesterday, and days before,
Sun is cold and rain is hard,
I know; been that way for all my time.
'Til forever, on it goes
Through the circle, fast and slow,
I know; it can't stop, I wonder.

I want to know, have you ever seen the rain?
I want to know, have you ever seen the rain
Comin' down on a sunny day?

Yeah!

I want to know, have you ever seen the rain?

I want to know, have you ever seen the rain
Comin' down on a sunny day?

Overall Meaning

The opening lines of John Fogerty's "Have You Ever Seen the Rain" are about the anticipation and impending feeling of a storm. The "calm" that someone had mentioned to the singer is the moment just before a storm hits. Knowing that it's been building for some time, the storm becomes something expected, even though it brings destruction and chaos, it is inevitable. The next few lines make reference to the belief that "after the storm," things will be better - "it'll rain a sunny day." On the surface, this is both a hopeful and contradictory message, as we would normally associate an actual storm with darkness and despair, but the lyrics create a moment of hopefulness by shining a light on the possibility of something better. The final line of this verse refers to how the rain falls like water, which is reminiscent of how natural and inevitable the storm is.

The opening lines of the second verse refer to the cyclical nature of life. The sun and rain oppose each other, and each influences the other. The sun is cold, and the rain is hard, which are unexpected qualities for those elements. We can infer that the reference to it being that way "for all my time" means that this natural cycle has been going on long before the singer was born and will continue long after. The final lines of this verse indicate both a sense of passion and concern. The singer is wondering whether the cycle can continue indefinitely, as implied by the phrase "it can't stop." Overall, these lyrics point to the fundamental challenge of life, which involves accepting the inevitability of change and finding a way to weather it.

@GunjanAayu

I saved this song in my playlist for my 5 month old daughter. I shed few tears, thinking my daughter will remember me through this song after reading comments from young people being reminded about their loved ones through this song.

I'm 72 now also. This is STILL one of my all-time favorite songs. The organ coming in during the last 1/2 of the song (on the original recording, not in this performance) adds a lot to the feel of the song. Couldn't be better.
