Queen of the Ghetto
John Holt Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

She's a queen of the ghetto, and i know so
Oh yeah

She lives in the heart of the city, yeah
Down there where there is no pity, no
She knows the root of the rootless
She lives among the baddest of the baddest
She's the queen of the ghetto She don't wear no fancy make up
She don't wear no fancy dress
She is a natural natural beauty, yeah
He heart is pure and clean

She's the queen of the ghetto She lives in the heart of the city, yeah
Down there where there is no pity, no

She knows the root of the rootless
She lives among the baddest of the baddest

Overall Meaning

In John Holt's song "Queen of the Ghetto," the singer is describing a woman who is a leader and symbol of strength for those living in a poor and disadvantaged neighborhood. The lyrics paint a picture of a resilient and proud woman who is unapologetic about her roots and her identity. While the rest of the city may look down on the ghetto and its inhabitants, she knows and understands the struggles of those around her.

The line "She knows the root of the rootless" is particularly powerful, as it describes the woman's ability to empathize with those who have been marginalized and forgotten by society. Despite the hardships she faces, however, the woman is still able to maintain her natural beauty and purity of heart. The song is a tribute to those who thrive in difficult circumstances and serve as beacons of hope for those around them.

THIRTEENTH SONG REMEMBERING JOHN HOLT ON OCTOBER 19. HE PASSED JUST TWO YEARS AGO AT AGE 67.
Released in 1980 and again produced by Henry "Junjo " Lawes and backed by the Roots Radics band. How can you sing a more heartfelt song? When I first heard it I used to close my eyes and be transported to Jamaica. I could actually feel the breeze blowing through the island. THIS SONG WAS ANOTHER MASSIVE HIT AND IS JUST TOO GREAT!
