Time To Die
John Maus Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

It's time to die
And everybody knows that you can't ask why
And even if the answer could be supplied
It wouldn't change the fact that it's time to die
It's time to die

Listen to your body
Listen to your body
Listen to your body
Listen to your body
Listen to your body
Yah, listen to your body
Listen to your--

It's time to die
And everybody knows that you can't ask why
And even if the answer could be supplied
It wouldn't change the fact that it's time to die
It's time to die

It's time to die
And everybody knows that you can't ask why
And even if the answer could be supplied
It wouldn't change the fact that it's time to die
It's time to die

Listen to your body
Listen to your body
Listen to your body
Listen to your body
Yah, listen to your body
Yah, listen to your body
Listen to your--

It's time to die
And everybody knows that you can't ask why
And even if the answer could be supplied

It wouldn't change the fact that it's time to die
It's time to die

Overall Meaning

The lyrics of John Maus's song "Time to Die" seem to be contemplative of the inevitability and purpose of death. The repeated statement "it's time to die" emphasizes the inescapable nature of the end of life, and how no amount of questioning can change that fact. The lines "even if the answer could be supplied" suggest that there may be some sort of reason for death, but ultimately it doesn't matter because the end result is the same.

The repeated refrain of "listen to your body" could be interpreted as a reminder to be mindful and present in the moment, especially when faced with the knowledge that our time is limited. It could also be a call to pay attention to the signs and messages our bodies give us, as they are often indicators of our overall health and wellbeing.

Overall, the song seems to be a meditative exploration of the inevitability and mystery of death, as well as a call to live fully in the present moment.

You know how certain songs bring back memories even though it may be the first time you've heard the song? Yeah, this is definitely one of those songs. Brings me back to a few years ago, to a random memory of being in my girlfriend's bathroom, high on opioids. Looking back though, the drugs never made the days better, it was within me all along.

such a beautiful look at the bizarre reality of mortality, i hope johns been alright lately, with his brother passing. no one slapped bass quite like joe. rest in peace. and my thoughts go out to john and family.

Despite all the negative comments, there are some really good ones too.

Another thing I find interesting is that the sine wave synth sounds remarkably similar an ambulance. Its prevalence the entire song could signify that death is always nearby.

WoioW oioW

Death as well as life are both inevitable.

I appreciate the implication, since this is the first song on his first album, that all the rest of Maus's œuvre takes place in the afterlife.

Nobody

Ariel Pink's 'Time To Live' makes me want to stop the hiccup while Maus' 'Time To Die' makes me want to give in to the hiccup and instant heart failure.
