Quiet
John Mayer渀 Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

Midnight
Lock all the doors
And turn out the lights
Feels like the end of the world
This Sunday night

There's not a sound
Outside the snow's coming down
Somehow I can't seem to find
The quiet inside my mind

3:02
Space in this room
Has turned on me
And all my fears have me cornered me here
Me and my tv screen

The volume's down
Blue lights are dancing around
And still, I can't seem to find
The quiet inside my mind

Daylight is climbing the walls
Cars start and feet walk the halls
The world awakes and now I'm saved

At least by the light of day
At least by the light of day

Overall Meaning

The song "Quiet" by John Mayer is about feeling overwhelmed and alone in the middle of the night. The imagery of midnight, with all the doors locked and the lights out, creates a sense of isolation and being cut off from the world. Despite the snow falling and the silence outside, the singer cannot find peace of mind. The repeated line "I can't seem to find the quiet inside my mind" emphasizes the inability to escape from one's own thoughts and anxieties. The second verse brings the listener into the room with the singer, feeling the claustrophobia and fear building up around them. The TV screen offers no comfort, as even with the volume down there is a restless energy in the blue light.

As the song progresses, the daylight brings a sense of relief. The world around the listener begins to stir, and the bright light offers some respite from the darkness of the night. It's a reminder that no matter how difficult things feel, they will eventually pass. The song offers a sense of hope and a reminder that there are brighter moments to be found, even in the darkest of times.

The thing about this irresistible film is that it tells a great story. It has all the elements, plus every cliche imaginable, but I could watch it a hundred more times and never tire of it. Easily my favorite John Wayne movie, and one of John Ford's best. The "unspoken part" at the end, with Wayne taking Maureen O'Hara back to his cottage, is one of those things best left to the imagination. What a great movie.

Vince Townsend

That had already happened the previous night. That's why everyone was sniggering.

@Vince Townsend I was referring to the end of the movie, but yes, since they were married, that also happened.

Ray Mew

One of the greatest and feel good movies of all time. Victor and John and Maureen made a brilliant chemistry.
