Face to Face
John McLaughlin/Shakti Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴

I'm stuck in your face
I'm stuck in your mind
I'm stuck in the time we spent together
If it makes sense
In the unsensible
I'm stuck in your face
I'm stuck in your mind
I'm stuck in the time we spent together
We don't know what we've seen
But we've seen it anyway
We don't know what we've seen
But we keep on living it
We don't know what we've seen
But we've seen it anyway
We don't know what we've seen
But we keep on living it
I'm stuck in your face
I'm stuck in your mind
I'm stuck in the time we spent together
If it makes sense
In the unsensible
If it makes sense
Stuck in your face
Did you ever trusted your own mind
We don't know what we've seen
But we've seen it anyway
We don't know what we've seen
But we keep on living it
We don't know what we've seen
But we've seen it anyway
We don't know what we've seen
But we keep on living it
No we don't know what we've seen
But we keep on living it
No we don't know what we've seen
But we keep on living it
No we don't know what we've seen
But we keep on living it
I'm the heart, you're just the ego
I'm the heart, you need to go
I'm the heart, you're just the ego
I'm the heart, you need to go
I'm the heart, you're just the ego

I'm the heart, you need to go
I'm the heart

Overall Meaning

The lyrics to John McLaughlin/Shakti's song "Face to Face" convey a sense of being deeply connected to someone. The singer feels stuck in the other person's face, mind, and the time they spent together. It suggests an intense and enduring connection that goes beyond rational understanding. The lyrics touch upon the paradoxical nature of their relationship, acknowledging that it may not make sense in a conventional way, but they are still bound to each other. There is a sense of surrender and acceptance in the lines, "If it makes sense in the unsensible," indicating a willingness to embrace what they cannot fully comprehend.

The repetition of the line "We don't know what we've seen, but we keep on living it" further emphasizes the mystery and ambiguity surrounding their experiences together. The singer acknowledges that they may not fully understand or grasp the significance of what they have witnessed, but they continue to live and be impacted by it nonetheless. This suggests a deep level of trust and faith in the moments they have shared, even without complete comprehension.

The closing lines introduce a shift in perspective, where the singer asserts their importance and individuality. By proclaiming, "I'm the heart, you're just the ego, I'm the heart, you need to go," they assert their emotional depth and vulnerability, challenging the other person's ego-driven tendencies. It signifies a desire for independence and separation, a recognition that their heart needs to be prioritized over the other person's ego.

Overall, the lyrics of "Face to Face" delve into the complexities of a connection that defies logic and understanding. It explores themes of deep emotional attachment, mystery, surrender, and the struggle for individuality within a profound relationship.

My late cousin Julian "Julio" Gonzalez was killed in a horrific car accident on the 118 Freeway in Pacoima, California on October 16,1981 by a joy rider racing with another motorist. My cousin, aunt and uncle were just a few blocks away from the off ramp when he was struck and was propelled off the freeway to the street down below. My cousin was ejected from his father's truck he was driving. Fortunately and miraculously, my aunt and uncle survived this horrible crash!
I must admit, I questioned fate. It was so unfair that my cousin did no wrong and was taken away from us!
My cousin was only 25 years old with a son and his wife expecting the birth of their baby.
At the time, I owned this recording on cassette called - "The Best Of John McLaughlin".
I listened to this track countless times as it helped me to cope with losing my cousin.
Thank you John McLaughlin for your wonderful and spiritual music!

I hear you, friend. You are not alone. This fabulous music helps us to realise that we are all one. Through all my losses it has sustained me. I’m going to see John play in May 2022. He’s 79! Unbelievable. I hope you are doing well.
