two of us
John and Paul Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

Now, now or never, save us, valiant Moore!
The Dragon's coming don't you hear him roar?

Let him roar his Heart out, tis no matter
Stand clear, my Friends, this is no Time for chatter

Here, take your Spear
I scorn Sword, Spear or Dart
I'm armed completely in a valiant Heart

But first I'll drink, to make me strong and mighty
Six Quarts of Ale, and one of Aqua Vitae

Overall Meaning

The lyrics to John and Paul's song Two Of Us are often considered quite cryptic, and there are many different potential interpretations. One possible interpretation is that the song is a call to action, urging the listener to be valiant and courageous in the face of danger. The line "Now, now or never, save us, valiant Moore!" could be taken as a direct plea to someone named Moore, urging them to step up and be brave.

The following lines, "The Dragon's coming don't you hear him roar? / Let him roar his Heart out, tis no matter / Stand clear, my Friends, this is no Time for chatter," could be interpreted as a reference to some kind of impending danger or threat. The "dragon" could represent some kind of more abstract danger, such as social or political upheaval, with the call to action being to stand strong and not let fear or uncertainty get in the way.

The last two lines, "But first I'll drink, to make me strong and mighty / Six Quarts of Ale, and one of Aqua Vitae," could be seen as a nod to the classic idea of alcohol as liquid courage. In this interpretation, the call to action is not just to be brave, but to find the strength within oneself to face the challenge head-on.

I've always had difficulty working out which was the main melody over the harmonies, and now here it is! I love this!

It’s funny that at that point in time John and George are being presented the song and might be hearing the key change to the song for the very first time. Its not a predictable break I’d expect and at first doesn’t seem like it’ll resolve back into the song then quickly does and that’s my favorite part.
