Blue Suede Shoes
Johnny & The Dee El'Dorados Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

Well it's one for the money, two for the show
Three to get ready, now go cat go.
But don't you, step on my blue suede shoes.
You can do anything but lay off of my blue suede shoes

You can knock me down, step in my face
Slander my name all over the place.
And do anything that you want to do
But uh uh honey lay off of my shoes.
And don't you step on my blue suede shoes
You can do anything but lay off of my blue suede shoes.

Oh let's go cats!

You can burn my house, steal my car
Drink my liquor from an old fruit jar
Do anything that you want to do
But uh uh honey lay off of them shoes
And don't you, step on my blue suede shoes.
You can do anything but lay off of my blue suede shoes.

Rock!

Well it's one for the money, two for the show
Three to get ready, now go cat go
But don't you, step on my blue suede shoes.
You can do anything but lay off of my blue suede shoes.

Well it's blue, blue, blue suede shoes
Blue, blue, blue suede shoes yeah!
Blue, blue, blue suede shoes baby

Blue, blue, blue suede shoes
You can do anything but lay off of my blue suede shoes.

Overall Meaning

The lyrics to Johnny & The Dee El'Dorados's song "Blue Suede Shoes" convey a clear message of personal boundaries and the importance of respecting one's possessions. The song starts off with a catchy introduction, "Well it's one for the money, two for the show, three to get ready, now go cat go." Here, the phrase "one for the money" refers to the desire for financial success, "two for the show" implies the importance of putting on a great performance, and "three to get ready" emphasizes the need for preparation. The overarching theme of the lyrics is introduced in the next line, "But don't you, step on my blue suede shoes." The singer is cautioning others not to damage or disrespect their prized possession, symbolized by the blue suede shoes.

Throughout the song, the lyrics reiterate the importance of preserving the shoes, which are viewed as a representation of personal identity and individuality. The repetition of phrases such as "lay off of my blue suede shoes" and "don't you step on my blue suede shoes" emphasizes the significance placed on these possessions. The lyrics also outline various scenarios in which the singer is willing to tolerate certain actions, such as being knocked down or having their reputation slandered, but draws the line at anyone disrespecting their shoes. The song ends on a celebratory note, with the repetition of "blue, blue, blue suede shoes" and a reminder that although others may try to do various things, they should always respect the shoes.

Overall, "Blue Suede Shoes" is a playful and assertive song that uses the metaphor of blue suede shoes to represent personal boundaries and the importance of respecting one's possessions.

Watched it comin' up Winslow, down south park boulevard
Yeah it was looking good from tail to hood
Great big fins and painted steel
Man it looked just like the batmobile
With my old man behind the wheel
Well you could hardly even see him
In all of that chrome
The man with the plan and the pocket comb
But every night it carried him home
And I could hear him sayin'
Don't you gimme no buick
Son you must take my word
If there's a God in Heaven
He's got a silver thunderbird
You can keep your El Dorados
And the foreign car's absurd
Me I wanna go down
In a silver thunderbird
He got up every mornin' while I was still asleep
But I remember the sound of him shufflin' around
Right before the crack of dawn
When I heard him turn the motor on
But when I got up they were gone
Down the road in the rain and snow
The man and his machine would go
Oh the secrets that old car would know
Sometimes I hear him sayin'
Don't you gimme no buick
Son you must take my word
If there's a God in Heaven
He's got a silver thunderbird
You can keep your El Dorados
And the foreign car's absurd
Me I wanna go down
In a silver thunderbird
Down the road in the rain and snow
The man and his machine would go
Oh the secrets that old car would know
I still hear him sayin'
Don't you gimme no buick
Son you must take my word
If there's a God up in Heaven
He's got a silver thunderbird
You can keep your El Dorados
And the foreign car's absurd
Me I wanna go down
In a silver thunderbird
Me I wanna go down
In a silver thunderbird

“[The song is] a portrait of my dad. A lot of people think it’s about a car, but to me it’s about the man behind the car. Our parents are always a mystery, aren’t they?” - Marc Cohn

My dad sold cars right after retiring from the Air Force in 1961, El Paso, Texas. I was 5 but remember the new T-Birds he'd drive home. From the moment I first hear this song in 90 whatever, that's where I go when I hear it. Thanks Marc

This song hurts so much to listen to. I cry every time, remembering the man with the plan and the pocket comb... Every single line is my dad. Every single line makes me smile. Every single line chokes me up...
I miss my dad terribly but take comfort in knowing, he's finally driving that silver Thunderbird.
Thank you Mr. Cohn.

Thank you so much for putting this video up. It was filmed at my parents’ house in Darien CT 30 years ago, just before they sold it. That’s my bed the little boy lies in, next to my desk, our garage with the fantail window over the door. The buyers of the house made this little red cape into a snooty gray and white colonial - unrecognizable now - I’m as old now as the dad in the video, and my own beloved father’s been gone five years. So much time gone - and so much time brought back. Thank you, thank you, thank you.

Can you share more about it being filmed at your house? Were you friends with Marc Cohn?
