That Silver Haired Daddy of Mine
Johnny & Tommy Cash Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

In a vine covered shack in the mountains
Bravely fighting the battle of time
There's a dear one who's weathered life's sorrow
It's that silver haired daddy of mine

If I could recall all the heartaches
Dear old Daddy, I've caused you to bear
If I could erase those lines from your face
And bring back the gold to your hair

If God would but grant me the power
Just to turn back the pages of time
I'd give all I own if I could but atone
To that silver haired daddy of mine

I know it's too late, dear old Daddy
To repay for the heartaches and cares
But dear Mother is waiting in Heaven
Just to comfort and solace you there

If I could recall all the heartaches
Dear old Daddy, I've caused you to bear
If I could erase those lines from your face
And bring back the gold to your hair

If God would but grant me the power
Just to turn back the pages of time

I'd give all I own if I could but atone
To that silver haired daddy of mine

Overall Meaning

The first verse of Johnny and Tommy Cash's song "That Silver Haired Daddy Of Mine" describes the setting where the singer's father is currently residing - in a vine-covered shack in the mountains, fighting bravely against the ravages of time. The second line of the verse indicates that the father has lived a difficult life, marked by moments of deep sadness, and perhaps he is still coping with its aftereffects. However, despite these hardships, the singer remains deeply fond of their father, as expressed in the third line of the verse, where they refer to him as a 'dear one'. This suggests a close familial bond between the two, one that has endured despite the challenges they have both faced.

The chorus of the song further delves into the singer's relationship with their father. With a tone that is wistful and regretful, the singer wishes to undo all the pain they have caused their father over the years. They speak of wanting to erase the lines of worry and sorrow from their father's face and return the golden locks that have faded to silver with age. The singer pines to go back in time and make amends for their misdeeds, and they promise to go to any length necessary to make things right, highlighting the deep love and respect they hold for their father.

@@barrygioportmorien1 I've heard the song before but never by Johnny and Tommy Cash. Jim Reeves is a remarkable singer and I bet he nails this song. Have to look for it.

@@sandihackett3849 If you want to listen vocal harmony, then Everly Brothers is the one. Their version is my favorite, even above Simon & Garfunkel.

I was in the Air Force with Tommy Cash in 1959-1960 in Germany. He used to sing at the Airmen's club and I drank many beers with him. Great memories. I still have photos of us.
