After forming a band called The Streets and playing mostly in the Boston area, Johnny played with former Derek and the Dominos keyboardist Bobby Whitlock, then began a seven year stint with The J. Geils Band front man Peter Wolf. He played on Wolf's albums, and co-produced one of them, as well as joining him on world tours. In 1986, Johnny's band, Hearts On Fire, placed second in the WBCN Rock & Roll Rumble only to be edged out by Gang Green.
Gibson's Custom Shop designed a Johnny A. Signature Edition guitar per his specifications, placing him in an exclusive club with B. B. King, Wes Montgomery, Chet Atkins, and Les Paul himself.

I don't know how you sleep through this
I can't slow my broke heart down
I can't remember our last real kiss
Hey baby
Don't you wanna love me anymore?
Tell me that I'm crazy
Don't say it's been a long time coming
Don't say it's been a long time coming
That you don't want to love me anymore
You see how I move when you take my hand
Said it all before but you don't seem to understand
Cuz when I lay you down to bed
Are you really here or with someone else instead?
Hey baby
Don't you want to love me anymore?
Tell me that I'm crazy
That I don't see you staring at the door
Don't say it's been a long time coming
Don't say it's been a long time coming
That you don't want to love me anymore
I don't want to hold you back
But I don't want to let you go
And I'm breaking bad
So could you let me know
Am I dreaming (am I dreaming?)
That you're leaving (am I leaving?)
Tell me I'm dreaming
Hey baby
If you don't want to love me anymore
Don't tell me that I'm crazy
Cuz I can see you walking out the door
Just say it's been a long time coming
Just say it it's been a long time coming
Why you don't want to love me?
Hey baby
Don't you want to love me anymore?
Tell me that I'm crazy (I'm not crazy)
That I don't see you staring at the door
Say it's been a long time coming (Don't you wanna love me?)
Been a long time coming
But you don't wanna love me
Don't you wanna love me?
Tell me that you love me
Do you still love me?
Don't you wanna love me?
In Johnny A.'s song "You Don't Love Me," the lyrics express the singer's feelings of confusion, heartbreak, and insecurity in a deteriorating relationship. The song starts with a sense of isolation as it describes how the singer is wide awake while their partner is fast asleep, seemingly oblivious to the emotional turmoil taking place. The line "I can't slow my broke heart down" conveys the pain and difficulty the singer faces in moving on from the relationship, unable to forget their last genuine kiss.
The chorus pleads with the partner, expressing the singer's desperation for love and reassurance. The repetition of the line "Don't you wanna love me anymore?" highlights the uncertainty and fear the singer is experiencing. The singer questions their own sanity, wondering if they are imagining the distance and detachment they feel from their partner. The mention of the partner staring at the door and the question "Are you really here or with someone else instead?" hints at the possibility of infidelity or emotional detachment.
The second verse continues to emphasize the singer's confusion, highlighting their attempts to connect with their partner. The line "Said it all before but you don't seem to understand" suggests that the singer has communicated their feelings previously but feels unheard or misunderstood. The singer expresses their desire to not hold their partner back but also not wanting to let them go, reflecting the internal struggle they are facing. The mention of "breaking bad" could imply that the singer's emotions are becoming uncontrollable and intense, further contributing to their insecurity.
As the song progresses, the chorus is repeated, with the singer desperately seeking honesty from their partner. The final plea for the partner to simply admit that they no longer want to love the singer indicates a need for closure and acceptance of the situation.
Overall, "You Don't Love Me" captures the raw emotions and vulnerability of a person grappling with the realization that their partner may no longer love them. The lyrics explore themes of heartbreak, confusion, and the desperate need for love and validation.
