My favorite Japanese guitarist respected Mick Green.

Hello! I agree that this is a great rock song, a truly timeless piece of music. I don't know if you've heard this story, but Johnny Kidd & the Pirates helped Canada's "The Guess Who" get their first big break and their first hit. Back then, the band members would receive huge reels of audiotape from England featuring their most popular songs of the time, although they often had no labels and they didn't know who the bands or artists were! They learned the songs "by ear" and adapted them for their own use, playing in concert halls and community centers in their home city of Winnipeg, Manitoba. After they re-recorded "Shakin' All Over", they didn't have an official name for their group, so they released the record in a plain cover that said "Guess Who?" It was a huge success. Eventually, they took "The Guess Who" for their name. You ought to use your computer to listen to CBC Radio One online. The Guess Who's guitarist, Randy Bachman, hosts a wonderful weekly two-hour show called "Vinyl Tap" that features all sorts of great, classic rock/R&B/soul/pop music. He also has a channel of streaming music similar to his show, if I'm not mistaken. Check it out if you can!

@@robertmassucci1 This is quite some time before The Beatles broke through though (1960). The Beatles first hit didn’t come until October, 1962. Also, I wouldn’t call The Beatles a rock & roll band in the same way that Johnny Kidd and the Pirates were. Sure, they were influenced by rock & roll performers such as Buddy Holly and Chuck Berry and they even recorded some songs in a rock & roll style. But they incorporated a lot of other elements such as soul, folk and blues and even more after they broke through, such as psychedelic and progressive rock sounds.

Strangely enough though, one of their later number ones, Lady Madonna in 1968, did hark back to a rock & roll style, even though that kind of music had been out of fashion for quite a few years. And shortly after this, rock ‘n’ roll came back in a big way in the early 70’s, lasting right the way through the decade with films and television shows cashing in on the boom; American Graffiti, Lemon Popsicle, Private Popsicle, The Buddy Holly Story, Happy Days, Grease, and in the UK, That’ll be the Day.

To British ears, the Guess Who vocal sounds like an impersonation and five years late at that. This record was a building block for the later Invasion. Look at it this way. George Harrison, Jimmy Page, David Gilmore Et al would have soaked this up and reached for their guitars. I saw JK live in 1960. He was a trail blazer.

We will never get music like this song ever again. It's a real classic amongst classics. I was lead guitarist in a Rock & Roll band in 1960. Th run in guitar solo was not easy to play as it required speed. I still play it to this day and I'm 74 years old and still rocking! The hardest part was getting away from the girls after the turns. We were like the Pied Piper for teenage girls.

Today was the first day I found out that Shakin' All Over was first sung by Johnny Kid and the Pirates in 1960. Having grown up in Australia, the song was made a hit in 1965 by Australia's Normie Rowe who did a great version. And then today, I also found out that it was sung by The Guess Who from Canada also in 1965. All great versions!

The lead guitar on this was played by Joe Moretti who was asked to help just on this number and he does a fine job.He later emigrated to South Africa and became a leading session player there.He died in South Africa in 2003( I think).He was a fine player.
