You Win Again
Jools Holland & His Rhythm & Blues Orchestra feat. Mark Knopfler Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

the news is out, all over town
That you've been seen, a-runnin' round
I know that I, should leave, but then
I just cant go, you win a- gain.

This heart of mine, could never see
What everybody, knew but me
Just trusting you, was my great sin
What can I do, you win a gain.

I'm sorry for, your victim now
cause soon his head, like mine will bow
Hell give his heart, but all in vain
And someday say, you win again.

You have no heart, you have no shame
You take true love, and give the blame

I guess that I, should not complain
I love you still, you win again.

Overall Meaning

The lyrics to Jools Holland and Mark Knopfler's song "You Win Again" tell a story of heartbreak and disappointment as the singer realizes their partner has been unfaithful. The news has spread throughout town that the partner has been seen running around with someone else, and while the singer knows they should leave, they can't seem to let go. The heart of the singer was blinded by their love and trust, leading to the great sin of trusting their partner. Despite their wrongdoing, the partner wins again, leaving the singer to realize their mistake.

The song expresses the singer's absolute despair and heartache, as they plead for forgiveness and accept the painful truth that their partner has won once again. They apologize for the victim of this unfaithfulness, knowing that soon they too will bow their heads in sadness. The betraying partner is portrayed as unfeeling and apathetic, taking true love without a second thought and leaving the blame with the one who trusted them. In the end, the singer confesses their love for their partner, admitting that despite everything, they still can't help but love them.

Wait a minute now
The girl is thinking
Well, well will she wear that hat
Before she goes outside
Will she do this or that
And be satisfied
Who can tell
Mademoiselle will decide
Come on down the midway
Baby do you want to ride
Is it gonna be the roller coaster
Or the slippery slide
Who can tell
Mademoiselle will decide
Whatever you want baby
Whatever you want to do
Whatever you want baby
You know Daddy's right here for you
Wait a minute now
The girl is thinking
She's got a divorce lawyer
Once she was a beautiful bride
She's got the house and the money
Will she want what she can't divide
Who can tell
Mademoiselle will decide
Well well, Mademoiselle
Well well, Mademoiselle
Well well, Mademoiselle
Well well, Mademoiselle
Who can tell
Mademoiselle will decide

I've got a big smile on my face. My cares have melted away, for the time being. I'm about to play this for the third time.

Excellent. Mark's voice is good, Jules' piano is great and Gilson Lavis is so cool. can't quite put my finger on it but I love his style here; he plays behind the beat but it matters not - the whole is greater than the sum of the parts ;-)
