Smith Orchestra was a dance band that occasionally injected some jazz into their arrangements. The orchestra recorded for Victor, Columbia, and Brunswick between 1917 and 1922 and played at the Plaza Hotel in New York. A sub-set of the orchestra released two records as the Joseph C. “India” since 1947 but “Hindustan” continues to be the historic name. Great melody here!

I've been looking for this song,
since I heard it in a Poirot episode!
Have you, maybe, got a version with vocals?
@the78prof72
Sorry, I don't.

Put Hindistan jazz tune into u tube. First up Crosby and Clooney - harsh sound but very witty. Were they lovers? Who cares?.
Glen Gray and Casa Loma - a clever if slick arrangment with Pee Wee hunt? trombone Dunham? trumpet.
Coleman Hawkins loved their stuff and they influenced black and white bands.
The song is part of jazz folklore. There is a more than passing resemblance to Shnozzle Durante's 'Umbriago. Durante was an early jazzman.
