Thoughts
Josh Okeefe Lyrics

Nikolas Cruz murdered seventeen people
With an army-grade rifle that was perfectly legal
At a Florida school in a freshman building
A cold, dead hand 'round the gun he was wielding
So keep your thoughts and prayers, my friend

The whole, wide world is watching you
So keep your thoughts and prayers, my friend
Keep your thoughts and prayers

Nikolas Cruz was a red-flagged student
In the language of weapons, he was dangerously fluent
Tipped to authorities, placed on their watch list
Fathers and Mothers are still burying their kids

So keep your thoughts and prayers, my friend
The whole, wide world is watching you
So keep your thoughts and prayers, my friend
Keep your thoughts and prayers

Stoneman Douglas went to school one morning
With a kiss goodbye and no sign or warning
In the classrooms and hallways their bodies laid slain
They never came back from school again

So keep your thoughts and prayers, my friend
The whole, wide world is watching you
So keep your thoughts and prayers, my friend
Keep your thoughts and prayers

At nineteen years and not of age for a beer
Cruz entered a strip mall with nothing to fear
With a background record shown to be clean
Straight from the clerk an AR-15

So keep your thoughts and prayers, my friend
The whole, wide world is watching you
So keep your thoughts and prayers, my friend
Keep your thoughts and prayers

High-office politician dances around questions
To keep his Senate seat and his gilded mansions
Preaches to the choir of our Founding Fathers
But turns a blind eye to our sons and daughters

Now you need your thoughts and prayers, my friend
The whole, wide world is watching you

Now you need your thoughts and prayers, my friend
You need your thoughts and prayers

Overall Meaning

The song "Thoughts & Prayers" by Josh Okeefe is a powerful commentary on the issue of gun violence in America. The song specifically addresses the shooting at Stoneman Douglas High School in Florida, where Nikolas Cruz killed seventeen people with a legal army-grade rifle. The lyrics express the futility of offering empty "thoughts and prayers" in response to such tragedies while politicians fail to take meaningful action to prevent them.

The first verse of the song describes the horrific shooting at Stoneman Douglas High School, emphasizing the fact that the gun used was legally obtained. The chorus repeats the phrase "keep your thoughts and prayers" as a way of challenging the superficial response to the tragedy. The second verse highlights the fact that Cruz had a history of red flags and still managed to acquire a weapon. The chorus is repeated again, emphasizing the need for action rather than merely offering thoughts and prayers. Finally, the third verse critiques politicians who offer empty platitudes about the Second Amendment while ignoring the devastating effects of gun violence on American families.

The song is a powerful call to action, urging Americans to demand change and to hold their elected leaders accountable for failing to take meaningful action to prevent gun violence.

Gun debate aside, i will never understand why suddenly “thoughts and prayers” is a bad thing.

It’s used in endless other situations and it’s fine.

What happens in these situations is horrible. Acts of terror in which no one can pinpoint one certain cause. But out of all that people choose to attack “thoughts and prayers”.

Some people aren’t high ranking politicians, some people aren’t activists, some people aren’t NRA members.

Most people are just good caring people who can’t do too much on there own. The one thing they can do that brings solace, even if just to themselves, but hopefully some others, is using their thoughts and prayers.

@sleepnomore1888

Nice job but he should write a song about the MKUltra program, instead of the mainstream news narrative on shootings if he really wants to be contemporary. The MKUltra mind control program, long since admitted by the US government with Bill Clinton publicly apologized for it during his presidential term, was exposed after the discovery of partial financial records, which were mysteriously left in a box, while the destruction of all other records were illegally ordered to be destroyed by the then CIA director in the 70s. Since then, more and more official documents have been recovered revealing the size, scope and horror of the experimentation done on live humans for more than 2 decades.

The official story is that the program was terminated, but if you believe that then message me because I've got a bridge I can sell you.

Most, not all, of these shootings are done by people who have a history of prescription drug. Most of the shooters report hearing voices, a technology that is also now admitted by the US government and most of them are shown to be handled or in contact with intelligence agency officials long before they committed their crimes.

The media has reported on all this, but unfortunately they don't emphasize it. Instead, they push the lies and propaganda that the elite banking class who owns them provides to them in order to control the minds of as many people as possible, and in this case they want to disarm the American public by forcing gun control laws, which are unconstitutional and go against everything the United States was created for.

Don't believe me? I don't care...you will eventually, it's only a matter of time, the truth can only be silenced for so long. It's all coming, hold on, it's going to be a fun ride!

@BabyJesus66

Except the two recent incidences of the "good guy with the gun" being killed by police when they got there, because they seen a guy holding a gun, after being called to a place because a guy holding a gun is shooting at people... It's hard to tell if its a good guy, or bad guy holding a gun by looking at them for a couple seconds... before you have to decide if you should shoot them, or wait and see if they shoot you first.

So yes this may work sometimes, but it also dont work sometimes...

What about if the good guy doesnt have the greatest aim and hits a bystander?

What if a guy is robbing a bank with a fake gun that could never hurt anyone and the good guy shoots him, killing him, but also kills the kid or bank teller standing behind him?

The real world isn't western movies where you quick draw and take down 6 bad guys before they can turn around. I agree it can work, but its also not a solution to the problem.

@BabyJesus66

@@sleepnomore1888 I agree, I dont think guns should be abolished. I own guns myself. I dont think there is a solution to the problem. There's some things that could help slow it down some.

One of the recent "good guy with a gun" being shot incidents was at a mall and I believe the good guy was still engaging with the bad guy when the cops showed up, or at least there was some obvious confusion. It probably wouldn't be smart to put his gun down in a crowded mall with people running around... But holstering it might have helped in either case. Although once again in chaos you're not exactly thinking of every little detail or have time to. If you just almost got killed, seen your friends get killed, then shot and killed a bad guy... you might be in shock or at least be shaken up and not be thinking clearly enough to think I should set this gun down now.

As far as the robbery scenario. I didn't mean the robber gets killed is the problem. I meant if someone shoots at the robber (who didnt have a gun to begin with) and theres a kid/bystander standing behind him that gets killed by the good guys bullets. Then a kid was killed for no reason. So in other words an incident where nobody would have been hurt, turns into an incident where maybe the robber and some bystanders get killed or injured.

There's also the chance that the bad guy sees the good guy going for a gun and shoots him dead before he has a chance.

There could be someone robbing you that never plans to actually use their gun... You pull out a gun and he shoots you. If you didn't have the gun you might have lost your wallet, but not your life.

Or the guy who had a legal gun and got pulled over for a broken tailight if I remember right, and told the cop he had a legal gun. The cop freaked out and shot and killed him. He didnt even pull out the gun, just went for his ID as the cop demanded.

So all I'm saying with all of this is that good guy with a gun might works sometimes, but definitely has some drawbacks as well. Maybe having more armed good guys, along with some of the loopholes being fixed, and increased background checks would help. I dont think the majority of people (even liberals) want to ban guns. Just want some common sense stuff that might help. I'm a gun owner and would have no problem waiting a few extra days on my next gun purchase if that extra background check stops even one school or church shooting from happening. Id hope any rational person would agree with that conservative or liberal or anywhere in between.

Folk music is there to challenge us, to question an ever devolving society. It should be thought provoking, we should feel uncomfortable and not hide behind excuses. This is a great song and raises those questions which politicians have become to blind to address.
