Falling In Love With Love
Julie Andrews Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

Falling in love with love is falling for make-believe
Falling in love with love is playing the fool
Caring too much is such a juvenile fancy
Learning to trust is just for children in school

I fell in love with love one night when the moon was full
I was unwise with eyes unable to see
I fell in love with love, with love everlasting
But love fell out with me

Oh, I fell in love with love one night when the moon was full
I was unwise with eyes unable to see

I fell in love with love, with love everlasting
But love fell out with me

Overall Meaning

The lyrics to Julie Andrews's song "Falling In Love With Love" speak to the pain and folly that come with being infatuated with the idea of love rather than with a person. Andrews sings of falling for make-believe, playing the fool by caring too much, and the difficulty in learning to trust. The repetition of the phrase "falling in love with love" emphasizes the cyclical nature of this experience -- the singer falls in love with love repeatedly, despite her past experiences of heartbreak.

The second verse of the song introduces a personal anecdote about the singer falling in love with love one night when the moon was full. Her unwise eyes led her to fall for love everlasting, but ultimately, love fell out with her. The wistful tone of the song highlights the singer's regret for mistakes made, but also exposes the universal experience of trying and failing to make love work.

Everybody’s saying that this version of the song is too happy, but I love it. It makes me feel like Mary Poppins while telling you that love isn’t real and everybody you love will leave you.

Em Tims

It such a weird thing to say, but I love that I can understand every word that she sings. She has wonderful enunciation.

Devi Wolf

That's not at all weird. I have a problem differentiating sounds (different from deafness) and Julie Andrews iis just about the only singer whose every word I can understand. This makes her singing much more enjoyable for me - and when it's combined with her marvelous voice, Wow!.

Joshua Alexander

@Devi Wolf her and Barbra Streisand both pronounce every syllable I’ve always appreciated that. Broadway singers tend to do it more so than regular studio artists

PrincessPearlipat

I agree, Julie Andrews has a gorgeous voice, but bernadette Peters infuses this song with appropriate bitterness.

Kyjuan Carter

PrincessPearlipat agreed. She sounded appropriately jaded
