Julie Andrews got her big break when her stepfather introduced her to Val Parnell, whose Moss Empires controlled prominent venues in London. Andrews made her professional solo debut at the London Hippodrome singing the difficult aria "Je Suis Titania" from Mignon as part of a musical revue called "Starlight Roof" on 22 October 1947.
Andrews gained fame at a young age in 1950s Britain by acting and singing on light entertainment radio programmes such as "Educating Archie". She rose to international prominence after starring in Broadway musicals such as My Fair Lady and Camelot, as well as musical films like Mary Poppins (1964) and The Sound of Music (1965).
Andrews had a major revival of her film career in the 2000s, in children's films such as The Princess Diaries (2001), its sequel The Princess Diaries 2: Royal Engagement (2004), and the Shrek animated films (2004-2007). In 2005, Andrews made her debut as a stage director with a revival of The Boy Friend, in which she also made her Broadway acting debut in 1954.
She was married with Blake Edwards in 1965 until his death in 2010.
We'll Gather Lilacs In The Spring
Julie Andrews Lyrics

And life is sad and grey
I have a scheme, a dream to try
I'm thinking, dear, of you
And all I mean to do
When we're together, you and I
We'll gather lilacs in the spring again
Until our hearts have learned to sing again
When you come home once more
And in the evening by the firelight's glow
You'll hold me close and never let me go
Your eyes will tell me all I want to know
When you come home once more
Your eyes will tell me all I want to know
When you come home once more
The lyrics of Julie Andrews's song "We'll Gather Lilacs In The Spring" express the sadness of separation from a loved one, but also the hope and anticipation of their reunion. The singer is far away from her beloved and everything seems dull and colorless without him. However, she has a plan, a dream that she will try: to gather lilacs in the spring with him, walking together down a shady lane until their hearts have learned to sing again. The lilacs symbolize the beauty and joy of life, and their gathering represents the renewal of love and happiness. The singer longs for the moment when her beloved will come home, and they can be together once more.
The imagery of the song is romantic and nostalgic, evoking a sense of longing and tenderness. The idea of gathering flowers in the springtime is a classic motif of love and renewal in literature and poetry, and the lyrics capture that sentiment with simplicity and elegance. The singer's voice is gentle and emotive, conveying a depth of feeling that resonates with the listener. The song is a timeless example of the power of music to move and inspire us, to touch our hearts and connect us with our deepest emotions.

Although you're far away
Despite the distance between us
And life is sad and grey
And despite the gloomy state of my life
I have a scheme, a dream to try
I have a plan, a dream to accomplish
I'm thinking, dear, of you
I am constantly thinking about you, my dear
And all I mean to do
And all that I intend to do
When we're together, you and I
Once we are in each other's company
We'll gather lilacs in the spring again
We will collect lilacs during the spring once more
And walk together down a shady lane
And stroll down a leafy path together
Until our hearts have learned to sing again
Until our hearts have regained the joy of life
When you come home once more
When you return home again
And in the evening by the firelight's glow
In the evening, illuminated by the warmth of the fire
You'll hold me close and never let me go
You will embrace me tightly and never release me

When you come home once more
