Complicate things when you're young
The man around the corner likes to roll his dice
Just for fun he says, "Take it easy, babe
He's not the only one"
And all the light starts to yellow and fade
See you in the middle and all the love we made
It's just an illusion, this I know
I been around the block once, twice, maybe more
Never met a hungry fool I couldn't learn to adore
Hopeless smiles and crooked eyes
Traded in for a heart full of lies
I won't tonight
And all the light starts to yellow and fade
See you in the middle and all the love we made
I'm your girl and you're my man
It's just an illusion, this I know
When you've been around easy street
Carry your nightmares, so you'll take the heat
Some are lonely so they'll fight your wars
You never ask for much, but you always want more
Searching for your love, needing your love
I want relief not defeat
Some people say, I've got a lot to learn
And nothing comes easy and nothing comes in between
I'm your girl and you're my man
I can see the whole world at your feet
People come together to build their whole lives
Nothing for nothing, I'll, can give you something
Sometimes, sometimes this illusion is all I know
In "This I Know," Juliette & The Licks sing about the pitfalls of growing up and the complexities of relationships. The song acknowledges the idea that there is always more to learn, but also embraces the fact that it's okay to complicate things when you're young. The band uses a metaphor of rolling dice to represent how chance and luck play a role in one's life, and that we can't control everything. The lyrics also touch on the theme of illusion, specifically how love can sometimes feel like an illusion. Despite this, the singer still sees the whole world at their lover's feet and remains hopeful about their relationship.
The verses describe the singer's experience with various people they've encountered in life. They've been around the block multiple times and learned to love even the most flawed individuals. They've also felt the pain of betrayal and lies, but vow not to be defeated by it. The chorus repeats that the relationship is just an illusion, but the singer still identifies as the other person's girl and sees the world through their eyes. The song ends with the band embracing the idea that sometimes illusions are all we know.
