I sucked at bug catching contests. Probably because I didn't know what was used to judge the winning Pokemon. Base stats, or something. I can't even remember now.

It was a combination of Level, remaining HP, and overall rarity. I didn't understand that for a very long time, and it it always bugged me (pun intended) that my Scyther or Pinsir would lose to a Metapod or Venonat.

to win the bug catching contest, you cant damage the pokemon you are trying to catch. The game calculates winners based on stats, and theres a bug that it calculates using the current stats, meaning it uses the HP you caught the pokemon at. this is why caterpies can beat out your cool pinsir/scyther that you caught for the contest.

TL;DR catch pokemon at full health for bug catching contest and you'll probably win.
