I love this theme for a lot of reasons, but mostly because it perfectly communicates the inherent creepiness of the Ruins of Alph and ruins in general. People used to be there. Why did they leave? Was there a war? A natural disaster? An /unnatural/ disaster? There’s no way of knowing, and we’re left exploring the maze like remnants of stories untold and tales forgotten.

Space Detective

Your "was it a war" speculation reminded me of some batshit stuff I saw back when the Spaceworld '97 demo build of Gold/Silver was leaked.

So there's this town in that build that is called "Font", which was believed to be based on Hiroshima due to its location on the world map, and it happens to be where the Ruins of Alph were originally placed. This led to some really wild speculation and analysis; things like speculating that the hieroglyphs seen on the walls of the ruins were depicting the aftermath of a nuclear bomb detonation, the sunflower Pokémon being introduced in Gen. II because of how sunflowers IRL absorb radiation, Unown being the ghosts of those killed in the Hiroshima bombing, it was insane. There's a 4chan screencap floating around with all of this shit, if you want to see the stuff people came up with.
...And then people realized that Font was more likely based on the nearby town of Izumo; a place with a name very similar to the Japanese word for spring/fountain (izumi), and apparently notable for having tombs; a likely inspiration for the Ruins of Alph. So the Hiroshima-related theories and analysis kinda went out the window.

We still don't know what the intended lore behind the hieroglyphs was, though.
