Another keyword: "coworker". Is it that hard to think that she could be just that to Keith? A coworker? They could've just been talking business.

And you have to remember that we are seeing this from Shantae's POV. Of course, it'll look bad to her. There is such a thing as an "unreliable narrator" in many stories. We can only ever see her POV on this because it's her story. She doesn't know what was happening between Keith and his coworker, but she just assumed. Which ultimately leads to the craziness in this film.

And as we saw, Shantae was wrong for most of this movie. She tried to control Keith when he really did nothing wrong aside from listening to his friend.

Did he know about all her rules? No.
Did Shantae even consider that maybe he really had to work late? Nope.
Was he cheating on her? Nyet.

Honestly, this movie shows that neither men or women are perfect. But let's be honest, Shantae was doing way too much. All because a man said he was working late (and was, considering his position at his job). Her ego went up to 1k, couldn't even be happy for her friend who followed her advice. That and she was particularly arrogant to think that she could control our boy Keith. He literally did nothing wrong (save for listening to his 'friend').

Also, I'm starting to see how many of these films all had like a main character addressing the audience like it's Shakespeare. How To Be a Player and Two Can Play That Game.

This film is one of my top 10 favorite “comfort” movies. I used to watch it when it would air on one of the movie channels a lot (I think it was Showtime or STARZ). To this day, I adore this film. Vivica Fox gave all that needed to be given. She is stunning in this movie. This era was her peak, and I love VF’s every performance in every film from those years. ♥️

Yasss!!!!! I watched this movie faithfully when I was in middle school and some of the girls were calling themselves taking her advice, lol. This is the classic Hurt people hurt people movie. Shante and Keith both hurt each other to get each other in line. What I took from this movie in my adult years of course, I learned that it’s ok to not know everything and it’s ok to be vulnerable to your friends. Now I am with her about receiving bad advice, especially Keith getting bad advice from Tony. If they would’ve communicated properly (and especially if Keith didn’t bring ol girl to their spot), they wouldn’t have to play games with each other. The best observation from you was if her friends saw how Keith and Shante was having issues, why did they continue to take her advice? Love this breakdown!

Loved this movie. Now that I am older I understand now that this could simply been squashed at the lunch that Keith took her to. If he wasn't able to be honest, make better choices, and respect her boundaries then she had every right to break up with him. They were too grown for bullshit and all of them including their friends played childish games.

In that video you activley victim blame cicely all throughout the video and only hold louis "Dr. Feel Good" accountable, when he was cheating on his wife. I completley understand that it ABSOLUTLEY could not have been your intention by ANY means to victim blame cicily for what happened to her that night. But the matter of the fact nostalgia is that it was CLEAR as day from the BEGINNING that, that baby was sexually abused and GROOMED by her father and as a RESULT of said grooming did indeed suffer electra complex. Now, im not sure if you knew this and if not 100% fine my love. But in the directors cut of the film it is CONFIRMED that he DID indeed sexually violate that baby. I am only writing and expressing my feelings towards this because often times and too often enough, in the black community we AUTOMATICALLY believe the father and dismiss and DEMONIZE the black little girl , which is DISGUSTING. I understand having a perspective and nuance but it really is concering especially considering directors cut of the film or not the film CLEARLY shows that, that poor baby was GROOMED and yet you overlooked those very scenes ESPECIALLY the bathtub scene. The matter of the fact is nostalgia if that baby simply had her "period" like you said that baby would have NO reason to be taking HOURS in the bath unless she was washing away something she felt was DISGUSTING. And that thing was the sexual abuse I am in no way making this to call you a horrible human being I am simply writing and typing this out of my deepest concern because SA in the black community is something we as people need to STOP playing and fooling around with and the more we BLAME the victim the more we are stuck in a constant generational curse that cant be broken. Sigh...these retro videos got me like....if we knew then what we know now cuz baby....alot of these celebs and careers/went all the way left lol. I look back at 90/00s cinema, black and mainstream, like a time of innocence.
