Their music can be described as guitar-based singer-songwriter rock or folk-rock. It ranges from very delicate and intimate singer-songwriter songs to songs that are stronger, more active and louder. Sam’s smoky, enigmatic voice is the band's best known characteristic. In the seven years between The Great Subconscious Club and Almost Happy the music changed from raw and guitar-based to a more subtle and delicate sound. Sam and Gert write most of the music and lyrics. Most of it is written separately.
Sam mainly tries to express ideas in his songs, and has a hand in writing silly and tongue-in-cheek songs. Gert has one big theme: losing the one you love. While most of the songs are easily accessible and open, some others are strange and incomprehensible. This led Sam to comment: "Listening to the lyrics in the first time, you may find it hard to understand their meaning. When you listen to them a second time you may sense a basic truth in these cryptic words. If you do so, please let me know."

Someone to Say Hi To

look at where you're standing who you are
and all our moments good and bad forever in my head
wish we could go back just once and laugh at things we said
It's been wonderful and crazy knowing you
and I hope that I can always see the teenage girl in you
and I know that you'll be fine
you need someone to say hi to late at night
Remember how I told you I was scared
you'd end up with some jerk who doesn't even know you're there
but deep down I just knew that you would find someone who's real
doesn't claim to know exactly everything you feel
It's been wonderful and crazy knowing you
and I hope that I can always see the teenage girl in you
and I know that you'll be fine
but I'll be there every time
you need someone to say hi to late at night
Sometimes when I think of us I'm sad
I miss not knowing anything of what could lie ahead
when mostly now I'm grateful that you're where you want to be
not quite here and not quite there but somewhere in between
It's been wonderful and crazy knowing you
and I hope that I can always see the teenage girl in you
and I know that you'll be fine
but I'll be there every time
you need someone to complain to late at night
The song "Someone to Say Hi To" by K's Choice is a heartfelt ode to a close friendship. The singer reflects on the ups and downs they've experienced with their friend, and expresses their hope that they will always see the person as the "teenage girl" they once knew. The song begins by acknowledging the friend's accomplishments and position in life, and expressing a desire to go back and relive some of the moments they shared. The singer then offers support and reassurance, assuring the friend that they will be there whenever they need someone to talk to.
The chorus of the song serves as a sort of mantra, with the singer repeating their hope to always see the friend as they were when they first met. The second verse reveals that the singer had some reservations about their friend's future, but ultimately had faith that they would find the right person. The song continues with a bittersweet reflection on how things have changed, but ends on a note of gratitude that the friend is happy and still a part of their life.
Overall, "Someone to Say Hi To" is a deeply emotional and relatable song about the enduring power of friendship. It captures the mix of joy and sadness that comes with growing and changing alongside someone, and offers a reminder that even when life takes us in different directions, some bonds never truly break.
