Their music can be described as guitar-based singer-songwriter rock or folk-rock. It ranges from very delicate and intimate singer-songwriter songs to songs that are stronger, more active and louder. Sam’s smoky, enigmatic voice is the band's best known characteristic. In the seven years between The Great Subconscious Club and Almost Happy the music changed from raw and guitar-based to a more subtle and delicate sound. Sam and Gert write most of the music and lyrics. Most of it is written separately.
Sam mainly tries to express ideas in his songs, and has a hand in writing silly and tongue-in-cheek songs. Gert has one big theme: losing the one you love. While most of the songs are easily accessible and open, some others are strange and incomprehensible. This led Sam to comment: "Listening to the lyrics in the first time, you may find it hard to understand their meaning. When you listen to them a second time you may sense a basic truth in these cryptic words. If you do so, please let me know."

With a cigarette in your mouth
And your hands reaching out for something
If I could, if I could wear all your clothes I'd still be different
And if I had your speaking voice I'd never whisper
I'd talk and talk and talk
We will be winners
And all is indefinite in you
Whatever you've been told
Don't turn to God because you're cold
Try the black one, white is nice
If you want blue, you'll pay the price
Is there no room for us
I'll make a space for us
We will be winners
Our heads glued together
And all is indefinite in you
Meet me in front of the room where we kissed
Where you changed me, estranged me
Where no one resists
Where I followed you, hollowed by you
We will be winners
Our heads glued together
And all is indefinite in you
We will be winners
We will be winners
The song "Winners" by K's Choice is a poignant reflection on the complexities of human relationships, with the central theme being the idea of yearning for what we don't have. The lyrics open with the singer imagining drawing a portrait of someone they admire, with a cigarette in their mouth and outstretched hands, symbolizing the desire for something beyond their reach. The subsequent lines express the singer's desire to become someone else, stating that even if they wore the same clothes as this other person, they would still be different. The singer also expresses a longing for the person's voice, suggesting that they find the other's manner of speaking more powerful and effective than their own.
The chorus of the song provides the central message: "We will be winners, our heads glued together, and all that is indefinite in you." This phrase expresses a sense of unity and shared purpose, suggesting that these two individuals together can overcome the uncertainty and ambiguity that they might face in their lives. The next set of lyrics suggest a rejection of traditional religious beliefs, with the singer presenting an alternative: "Don't turn to God because you're cold, try the black one, white is nice, if you want blue you'll pay the price." This could be interpreted as a call to embrace non-traditional beliefs or to seek solace in alternative ways.
Overall, "Winners" is a song that explores universal themes of desire, longing, and the search for meaning in human relationships. The lyrics are introspective and poetic, yet accessible, making it a memorable and impactful song.
