Their music can be described as guitar-based singer-songwriter rock or folk-rock. It ranges from very delicate and intimate singer-songwriter songs to songs that are stronger, more active and louder. Sam’s smoky, enigmatic voice is the band's best known characteristic. In the seven years between The Great Subconscious Club and Almost Happy the music changed from raw and guitar-based to a more subtle and delicate sound. Sam and Gert write most of the music and lyrics. Most of it is written separately.
Sam mainly tries to express ideas in his songs, and has a hand in writing silly and tongue-in-cheek songs. Gert has one big theme: losing the one you love. While most of the songs are easily accessible and open, some others are strange and incomprehensible. This led Sam to comment: "Listening to the lyrics in the first time, you may find it hard to understand their meaning. When you listen to them a second time you may sense a basic truth in these cryptic words. If you do so, please let me know."

Winter
K's Choice Lyrics
Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴ Line by Line Meaning ↴
There's no real reason to be sad to the people who are
Smiling, always happy, always gay they do not know
That the edges of the mouth can move the other way
You're freezing, the ice on which you nearly slipped outside
Is in your body, in your mind, getting warmer you are
Dreaming, quite useless but it feels okay to you
Keep on searching for a thing sublime
When all you need is inside of you
Everybody's waiting for springtime
Well winter can be cozy too
Cherish the moment, cherish the key
That leads to sane insanity
Cherish incompetence, cherish me
Don't ever cherish somebody who
Keeps on searching for a thing sublime
When all you need is inside of you
Everybody's waiting for springtime
Well winter can be cozy too
The song "Winter" by K's Choice is a melancholic ode to the season that is often associated with sadness, loneliness, and depression. The lyrics are a reflection of the internal struggle that many people face during the winter months, when the darkness and cold can become overwhelming. The opening lines set the tone for the rest of the song, with the singer addressing someone who is crying but pointing out that as long as the tears are transparent and not red, there is no need to be sad. This suggests that the person is perhaps crying out of frustration, sadness, or feeling overwhelmed, but the singer is encouraging them to take comfort in the fact that their sadness is not extreme.
The second verse focuses on the physical experience of winter, with the singer describing the coldness and the way it can seep into your body and mind. The mention of slipping on ice suggests that the person has had a difficult time navigating the winter weather, and the dreaming is a way of finding escape in a world that is also dreaming. The refrain "keep on searching for a thing sublime when all you need is inside of you" is a poignant reminder that we often look for external sources of happiness when we already have the ability to find it within ourselves. The final lines of the song offer a message of consolation, reminding listeners that even in the winter, there is beauty to be found and moments of coziness to cherish.
