Oh man crazy, I didn’t know the depersonalization experience could persist long after marijuana use.

I’ve used a strain of marijuana (I don’t know which one) that made me experience depersonalization. At the time it was a very welcome experience because I was going through some stressful emotional tumult due to the sudden end of a romantic relationship.

For the few hours that I was under the influence, I couldn’t feel the emotional pain- it felt like I was floating in the room, looking down at myself and analyzing my stream of consciousness the way you’d read about the feelings of a character in a book.

I could cognitively engage with my emotional experience, but I wasn’t feeling anything. It was almost like I was thinking about someone else’s post-breakup experience.

I was actually pretty happy about that experience because for a time I couldn’t feel any of that stress and pain.

What I didn’t know was that the effect could persist for months or even years after substance use. Strange. Must be frustrating to feel like you’re not quite in the driver’s seat of your life.

I went through this as well. Used to smoke every day and feel completely normal. Then all of a sudden it just wasn't the same, made me feel weird and anxious. Funny how others can also relate. 5 months sober now

I quit smoking too because of this. Fell in a bad depression also because I couldn’t handle this depersonalisation feeling. But after working on myself setting goals and doing mindful things in my life, no drugs drinking etc it got better day by day. Not easy but very rewarding experience in the end when looking back on it.

My take on this is it depends more on what state of mind you’re currently in, as opposed to just smoking a lot of weed. It’s like when people say “don’t trip acid if you’re not in a good place in life because you’ll have a bad experience.” It’s the same thing. I was in a bad place about 2 years ago, and smoking DID NOT help. It’s just made the anxiety 10x worse. Now, I’m in a much better place mentally so any time I smoke it’s nice and relaxing. Just my two cents.

Great to hear someone talk earnestly about this issue. I had several depersonalization and derealization episodes after smoking weed during my teen years, to the point where I thought I was going crazy. The feeling of seeing your own life as a movie is very disturbing. Even the feeling I had when I touched any surface would be different, like there was a delay between the touching and the feeling; almost like someone divided the feeling into small pieces and then slowly released it. I still remember when I was in the shopping mall with my dad and suddenly I started to cry and told him I thought I was going crazy. Unfortunately, this issue took away many years of my early adult life. When something like that happens to you, your self-confidence drops dramatically.
The notion that weed is a harmless drug is far from the truth for many people.

I stopped smoking pot because I had an episode of psychosis. I've never felt such a mixture of anxiety, panic attacks and unwarranted fear. I feel much better without marijuana. I don't drink alcohol either. I changed my diet to carnivore/keto. I take supplements such as lots of magnesium, potassium and vitamin D3. I feel insanely good not only physically, but also mentally. Take care of yourselves. You can live without pills or drugs and cope with difficult emotions. ❤️

It's comforting hearing someone as well known and that has such a large platform talk about this issue. I first started having issues on my 16th birthday, a few days after smoking some weed with friends. I had been smoking for some months but it wasn't until this later stage that I realised something wasn't right. I remember feeling a sense of doom and panic and this transcended into Depersonalisation and Derealisation over the coming months/years. Symptoms got so bad that I had to take time off of work to try and understand what was going on. I thought I would suffer forever, but I managed to overcome it and move past it with the help of research and also therapy. I am not sure exactly on how the process works but I understand that both DP/DR stem from anxiety and in order to move past this, you need to tackle it head on instead of shying away and cowering from it. Quite simply, you do not overthink it. When you get into a state where you feel you cannot go on, you carry on with what you are doing and don't pay attention to your symptoms. The less you pay attention to it, the less your brain focusses on the symptoms and less of an issue it becomes, to the point where you can do those same tasks in those same situations and not have any symptoms at all. This is unlikely to happen overnight, however, but I managed to make real progress within weeks and I can live my life day to day now as I did before I had ever even smoked week before. Good luck to anyone suffering with DP/DR. Stay positive, things do get better.

Had the same exact thing happen after an edible I took. Panic attacks, derealization, Depersonalization, sever anxiety for years. I never smoked or did weed after that incident and after a long time I started feeling better. At this point I’ve accepted some lasting effects but I feel waayyyyy better than I did for that first year.

Yep dude same thing. I went into extreme depersonalization with anxiety and depression that lasted for years. My life was a living hell feeling like I was watching outside of my body watching my life fighting to survive. I had to rebuild myself. It took me 4 years to fully recover and I’m on year 5-6 living my life sober, never touching that shit again. I didn’t get off scott free, I have to take lexapro, Inositol and vitamin d to keep me stable.

Only time it happened to me was when I smoked everyday for physical pain. Started getting regular exercise and now I only smoke when I know I've got nothing to do.

Every single high is different but most of the time I get super focused - great for games and general reading especially scientific papers I would never read other wise.

A drug is a tool, can be empowering if used correctly. I'll never quit though, it's the only reason I'm still alive today.

It’s crazy how this happens to a lot of people. Not talking the horrible possible laced experience, but with regular weed in general. You have to sample until you find a strain that works for you. I used to just smoke whatever, at any given point. That brought on a lot of anxiety. Everything turned full circle when I narrowed down the 3 or 4 strains that agreed with me.

I've realized that weed just isn't for me. I had access to pretty much all kinds and yeah, some didnt cause much anxiety but 90% of it did and took me to dark places. I think it's just not meant for some people just like alcohol but I have nothing against it.

I dealt with the same exact problem with weed in 2020. It started to give me panic attacks/heart palpitations. I went to the ER like 3 times just to be told I was having a panic attack. They threw anxiety pills at me but that is only supposed to be a temporary aid. The only way to truly deal with stuff like that is within.

You start by understanding how panic attacks work on a scientific level. This helps PA's from getting worse since you know it won't kill you and it will just be uncomfortable until it passes. The next thing is to figure out what is triggering it for you. Weed can accelerate panic attacks but that doesn't mean it's the source.

For me, it was losing control of my life which also made me realize I had some depersonalization disorder as well. Working out was the one thing I could control and actively see results from it so that helped me immensely on my journey to getting rid of panic attacks. Took a year before I could smoke weed again without attacks.

Post Malone doesn't seem like the healthiest dude and neither was I when I was dealing with all of that shit. I don't know him personally but he probably has some similar issues going on since I can relate so much and having a healthier lifestyle would help fix a lot of that anxiety. Instead of "making it work" he should face it and figure out how to overcome it.

@REAPER Mania I had it too it is the weed. The weed triggers disassociation which triggers panic attacks. After you had your first panic attack you become hyper-vigilante and get them again. We went 180 from "weed bad" to "weed always good", these days you can't say anything negative about weed, but people need to know the truth is somewhere in the middle. I am older than some and out of all my homies that smoked a lot of weed I would say a good third at least had bad experiences and panic attacks at some point.

just get ones that has low THC and you will be fine as long as u don't do it everyday.

i live in a country where weed is illegal and the only weed strain here is atjeh which is in my opinion, a very bad weed strain because it contains 0% cbd and 10% THC.
the Narcotics bureau stated that they will never want to legalize weed because of the strain that grows here has only THC content in it which can trigger psychotic tendencies and mental dissorders.

Just read your comment and was wondering as way before smoking I’d get chest pain and always said it felt like I was having a heart attack, now with smoking I’ll have joint and after that have a crippling sensation and I have to put weight (eg arm) over so it doesn’t feel as bad. I suffer from depersonalization/derealization as well after going through Serotonin Syndrome and overdosing off Adderall (I had also been smoking insane amounts of weed at this point so that didn't help). Over the years I've done a lot of research into it and trying to figure out what exactly is it's purpose in are bodies. The best way I can put it is that DP/DR is a defense mechanism are body uses when you cannot fight or fly. It's an eject system from stressful & dire situations. People who undergo extreme states of panic, stress, anxiety, or traumatic events tend to go through depersonalization/derealization. You become a spectator of your own vessel. It makes you feel like you are in a first person shooter. It's a living hell. It can takes months or years to get rid of for some people. Some people live there whole lives with it. But It can dissolve away. Best advice I can give too someone is to:

01. Stay away from substances that mess with your nervous system and that have dissociative traits (nicotine, weed, and alcohol).
02. Take your health/diet as serious as possible (Gym/Healthy Diet).
03. Try to find ways to cope with the stressors of your life.
Basically the cliche "Get Your Life Together" package.

Once you make better habits out of your life the likeliness of you feeling like yourself will increase. You might be depersonalized so long that you forget what it was like to be "normal" or what it was like before the DP/DR Onsetted. Somedays are better than others and it's not so intense. Other days it will be too intense and may hinder you from living your life. But you learn to live with it day by day. One day you'll stop thinking about it. You'll stop overreacting to how things look or feel because you'll have lived with it for so long that it becomes normal. & when you stop thinking about it and letting it dictate the quality of your life that's the moment you have recovered. I promise you things get better!

Lived with depersonalization disorder my whole life. It's easiest for me when I just accept it as normal. It does seem to get a little better or a little worse depending on my lifestyle but it's always there no matter what I do. Been completely sober and a total stoner, been dedicated to the gym and a fat lazy slob.. but depersonalization never goes away for me. I believe it's because I spend so much time watching screens. My work and most of my recreation involve looking at screens (my job is computer based and I love video games). Seriously since the age of two it's been screens every day. One day if I ever escape this line of work, I plan on doing an experiment by traveling somewhere and then not using any screens whatsoever for an entire year - no phone, no TV and no computers. If my thesis is correct, no screen use for an entire year should at least reduce the symptoms of my depersonalization disorder, although I fear that it will forever be with me because my brain developed while being hooked to screens thanks to video games and eventually computers. Maybe there's a medication out there that would help? Medications make me nervous though like it will unlock something even worse... but it would be really nice to make this feeling go away even if just for a while, to feel how life is supposed to feel.

I relate to him so much with this. I used to smoke a lot, and one day in 2019 it put me into an absolute tailspin where I didn’t feel myself and had to go to a doctor. It would cause panic attacks that would cause me to faint, and I haven’t touched it since. I’m not saying it’s bad for everyone, but I have no desire to do it again, ever, because I thought I would never get out of that feeling I had. It really messed me up for a long time. That said - this podcast seemed so unprofessional. Too many sidebar conversations. I’ve been on podcasts, so I know it’s more laid back - but this isn’t good. I just wanted to connect with what Post was saying, and these guys just kind of were creating chaos around a serious situation.

The reason you were able to enjoy weed beforehand is probably because you had no responsibilities or nothing to worry about if your stressing over something and getting butterflies in your stomach thinking about something while your sober don’t even think about smoking weed because that’s when the panic attacks happened it’s definitely happen what always helps is taking a cold shower

I'm glad hes talking about it. I used to get high sun up to sun down then for whatever reason it flipped on me and wasnt a pleasant experience. I would get horrible anxiety and an empty feeling no matter what I smoked or how much. And before I get the comments, I'm an organic grower with 20 yrs under my belt, I've grown more varieties than most ppl can name and it didnt matter which I used. High thc, low thc, higher cbd lvls and whatever. I'm about 2 weeks sober rn and id say the majority of it just stopped. I still wanna get high but I know the effect wont be what I think its gonna be in my head. Wish I hadn't gone so heavy in my early yrs so I might have been able to enjoy it now

Really refreshing to hear someone like Post talking about this & everyone in the comments able to relate - you really feel like the only person in the world going through these issues. Like everyone else, smoked weed heavily for years through university. Initially started with heart palpitations which were causing panic but when I realised it was anxiety, I was able to deal with it better. Fast forward 7 years the heart palpitations don’t happen anymore, but I know have severe head tension which causes me to jolt, like an electric shock to the head. Blood tests etc all fine but now impacts me daily. Used to only get the feeling after smoking weed, now it’s everyday. Just wish I could feel normal again as it’s really impacting my daily life now. Lost my job this year which was a really well paid job through making stupid decision and been on a spiral since.

Dude. I went through a massive trauma that left me with debilitating PTSD, back in late 2015/early 2016. Had EXTREME depersonalization AND derealization. Felt like I was a ghost, like I was see-through, or not really there. Other times that the world around me wasn't real. These were not THOUGHTs, mind you, but FEELINGS that just would not go away. I'd wake up like that. Then, weirdly enough, I heard White Iverson randomly on the radio for the first time, never heard of Post Malone. That song was so comforting and peaceful for some reason, just really hit me and made me feel something good for the first time in ages. So I'd just loop it, over and over when things got bad. Absolutely instrumental to the healing process and my recovery. And it's the singular reason I became a fan, I've got all the albums now haha.

So I hope you find something like that yourself man. Whatever works for you, but I know how much it sucks, there's nothing else to compare it to and people don't really know what it's like if they haven't been through it themselves.

I smoke everyday and even if I’ve never felt this type of feeling (I smoke like 1 joint per day so it’s not an heavy addiction) I can understand that weed can really change your lifestyle. For example I cannot sleep without smoking earlier or I can barely feel hunger. I’m so happy when the day finishes just because I can finally smoke, which for my body it’s like a reward for the day passed. Rick C137 If you want an advice, you can try to quit for one week or so, just to understand how much do you need to smoke. I do that sometimes (I have to take a supplement to sleep properly lol) and it’s quite helpful, also the first joint after this little sacrifice will be incredibile😂

thats the "bad" reward mindset, you reward yourself everyday but you only get excited about the reward and not during your actual productiveness during the day, you will slowly start caring less and less about anything else but the "reward" and do the least amount possible, you already understand that you don´t like the feeling after you smoke ( I also always felt really physically bad), now you just need to understand why your brain is doing this so just do some research on the "reward mindset" and why it is bad, maybe it will help and motivate anyone feeling like this as it did for me.

@Dragozac I also was in ur position thinking there’s no way I could do life w out being high. Like I thought I’d never be able to sleep but I had gotten sick and I just knew it was time to give it up and never really had too many struggles sleeping but even if I did a short term struggle with your sleep and eating habits is so worth it compared to continue in a destructive lifestyle cause like you said with motivation it heavy made me unmotivated and lazy. Nicotine did too so I had to give both up but trust bro it’s very worth it. You gotta find ways to fill your time healthfully. For me it’s working out, doing music, and doing video. Ofc it’s diff for everyone but it helps immensely with not allowing idle hands cause it’ll only lead to being tempted to return to it. Also helpful to write down your cons of quitting and your cons of continuing in ur lifestyle. Id assume your cons of not quitting is way higher than quitting. You got it bro, it’s worth it.

I had the same experience, after the experience of depersonalization I couldn't tell what was real and what wasn't , I had to enter an inpatient facility for two weeks just to ground myself again. I haven't went near weed since. Four years later I have done a lot of internal work and I have definitely grown from those years in my mid 20's. I think eventually this type of experience will happen to anyone if they abuse weed. The mind is fragile

It’s the strangest thing tbh, happened to me last year with some weed I had got from the dispensary.

Remember heavily heavily feeling like I was spectating myself, I know that sounds weird af.

Also remember intense feelings of my life being completely scripted, as if everything has already happened and I am just simply playing out the script if that makes sense. Anyways it lasted like hour and a half and I stopped smoking after that, it was so weird too because when it happened I was driving, and after about 3 min of taking the hit of weed I remember the feeling came on so strong and as it came on I got pretty anxious and started praying and the second I started the prayer the sensor started going off for when the passenger hasn’t put on their seat belt. But no one was with me at all and that seat belt sensor was going off until I finally just strapped the seatbelt on for the passenger side and it went away as soon as I did that. I just thought it was odd that the sensor started going off almost immediately after I started praying.

Was a really strange experience.

I use to smoke basically everyday from 17 to 27 years of age. I think in the beginning I was doing it to "relax" and be an escape for me. As I got older, I started to realize when I was anxious about stuff (whether it was about work or life problems) and I would smoke, it would make me feel so much worst about my job or anything else that was bothering me in my life. I would question my life and all my decisions that it just didn't feel good anymore and I realized cannabis was just making me anxious more than anything. I switched to cbd for a month and quit right after. I don't really miss the urge to get high anymore. I breathe better too.

Wow. Literally exactly the same thing happened to me that happened to Post. I was smoking weed every day for quite a while. I had smoked something that was laced and had an extremely bad high, that completely changed everything, and never felt the same afterwards. I had panic attacks for almost two years after that. Where I couldn't go into a movie theater or stay in a super dark room for a long time. Luckily the panic attacks subsided over time. That was over 10 years ago and I basically completely quit smoking weed after that day. It was crazy to hear Post basically explain he had exactly the same experience I did.

Had the same thing happen. Smoked for years. Suddenly every time I smoked I was having panic attacks and then sober or high I felt I was just watching life pass me by. Even began to research depersonalization disorder as well. Crazy I haven't thought about it in about 2 years since finally quitting. Went through this too - highly advise Paul David's At Last A Life - he has a whole chapter on DP. Really helped me understand and 'Let Go' of the feelings of DP. Really scary, but the nature of anxiety is self-feeding, i.e. the more you worry about DP feelings, the more you exacerbate those feelings. Ironically the only way for the feelings to subside is for you to give up on them. I wish Post and anyone experiencing these feelings the best, and am here if anyone wants to talk or get help.

I'm going through the same thing right now. I got quite high last week Friday and had a panic attack, then after 2 to 3 hours, I was okay. But 3 days later I started having anxiety issues. It's almost been a week. I have frequent heart palpitations, but slowly, they're becoming easier and slowly I'm feeling better. I went to the hospital 2 days ago, and the doctor told me nothing was wrong with me. I just shared my story because I know loads of people might be going through the same thing now. But I KNOW, that I'm gonna be fine. Sometimes the feelings get soo bad that you feel like you're going crazy or you're gonna die, but you won't. It gets better. I don't know for how long I'll feel this way, but I know NOTHING LASTS FOREVER, And that's what comforts me. I'M GONNA BE FINE. AND SO ARE YOU. YOU ARE NOT ALONE. AND YOU WILL GET THROUGH THIS. Just find something that works for you. Could be a hobby or anything other thing. To keep you distracted. My doctor told me to just give it Time and I'll be fine. Alot of people in the comments have gone through the same thing, And they know how we feel because they've been through the same thing. Just give it Time. I love you soo much sis/bro. I was also in the hospital a few days ago for the same exact thing. That's fuckin crazy. Doc said I'm fine though, I've smoked daily for over 10 years and all of a sudden it's just not reacting well with me. I'm putting the weed down for now to focus on other things in my life. Yeah I’ve been going through it as well having to go to the hospital after bad panic attacks, I’m glad that I’m not the only one going through the struggle and overcoming demons. Shit is difficult , I found myself getting into alcohol now but to be honest it isn’t any better if not worse. I had this happen badly when I was 16, living a stressful home life and getting stoned 2-4 times a week. I woke up one day and it felt like everything was fake, it was horrible! I quit weed and I was slowly getting better for a few months and then it stayed the same. After roughly six years, I found out that I have moderate sleep apnea as my bottom jaw isn't aligned properly (and was partially choking me in my sleep every night). I have been using the CPAP for six months and this feeling is going away one day at a time! Using the CPAP is the only thing that made a significant difference for me. I know that using cannabis reduces REM sleep and so does sleep apnea. So my theory is that using weed chronically, as well as having interrupted sleep (from the weed and sleep apnea) caused this. Please get a sleep study to check for sleep apnea if you have this issue! I am not fully back to normal—but I'm getting better one day at a time.

Depersonalisation is one of the weirder parts of anxiety/depression. You can be in a deep conversation with somebody but equally feel so disconnected, just watching yourself speak, not taking anything in, feeling numb and elsewhere.

I was a heavy smoker and I totally get that “just watching your life happen” feeling. Think I figured it out. The human body has evolved to receive pleasure/satisfaction from solving problems and accomplishing tasks. Smoking allows apathy but in all areas of life. That’s why it makes a great safe and natural medicine for health problems. It’s not that cancer/anxiety/depression is solved it’s that management is easier because it calms the pain and the dread balanced or makes you say “fuck it” to the things that cause anxiety. So even when you are doing the tasks you don’t get the same “life giving” payoff pleasure from solving problems something our evolved bodies require for a “lived life” as opposed to a “watched” one. What do you all think?

@Jeremiah indeed it does. A change in perspective can be life changing. I think it all goes back to post survival time period. Our caveman ancestors lived during a time of survival. Every day was spent getting to the next hour. But as fire and weaponry were discovered and invented it lead to harnessing it. We stopped being gatherers and we started cooking which greatly improved survival stats. We were able to hunt instead of just being hunted. We consumed higher levels of protein which powered are efforts of survival. From there they combined energies for the creator good which led to the rise of civilizations. All these things happened because their was a life saving payoff at every turn. So many years have passed until now but the constant has been “solve problems, sustain life”. Unifying the European kingdom, The industrial boom, the internet, these all solved great problems for the majority. Sure things go awry each time a new period happens but the creator good is served. That’s why the only achievement left for the super rich is to leave a legacy, something that solves a problem for a majority. But it’s in our dna, we need to love problems for fulfillment and more importantly to keep from extinction

It works against the code that makes us human. It doesn’t have to be major either. Changing your own oil in your car, learning to cook and then inviting friends over for a meal you prepared, fixing something in your house, giving someone whose homeless some food. Try anything that helps solve a problem for you or someone else and pay attention to the feeling that proceeds. Use that feeling into the next task. I swear to you, that I have gotten off a laundry basket of medications living this way the last two years of my life. I’m getting teary eyed just explaining it because I know that if and when it’s applied by any reader of this then they too will feel true joy.

I went through that for a while but eventually I was able to ease back into it.
I was smoking one day and I wasn’t feeling like I was feeling anything so I kept smoking and smoking then eventually it felt like I couldn’t gulp to swallow air and it triggered a panic attack. I was on my hands and knees on the phone w my girlfriend, I thought I was being attacked by a ghost or something. After that I struggle with depersonalization for a while, I couldn’t eat, I would have panic attacks and my pupils would dilate and I’d start sweating. @Im Chase And it slowly dissipated right? Ya it's just interesting because literally everything you said even the part with the ghost is telltale weed withdrawal for me. It would feel almost like I took an anticholinergic/deliriant drug just because I didn't smoke.

Did you quit weed cold turkey after that bad high? Because if so that's probably what caused the later panic attacks and sweats and not eating. I remember the weed withdrawal getting so intense at some points that I would literally be scared of like.. phantoms and shit. Stuff that didn't make sense. And that was on top of the psychotic levels of depression.

Love this discussion. Many Men when they hit mid-late 20's - early 30's are actually going thru another physiological change as a Dr. explain to Me when I was having mild panic attacks and anxiety. When You are Younger You don't have the self awareness to realize the feeling. Puberty is just flat out raging so that blunts it to a degree during that period. It's also learned fight or flight responses that are built into our DNA. DBT and any kind of peaceful practice helps. The Unthethered Soul is a good read for tools for dealing.

Same thing happens to me and has happened quite a few times to say the least, my personal opinion on it, is that the weed nowadays is much more different than the bud of old, there are so many hybrids out and various strains that I think they're just too potent and have more of an anxiety effect than an enjoyable one. I was a heavy user a couple months ago, had slight depersonalization and anxiety after mixing with shrooms one time (if your gonna do this please be VERY careful). Afterwards I realized that my lifestyle had to change. Now i’m prioritizing sleep, meditating, exercising regularly and I feel great. not 100% sure, but I quit because it felt like nothing was happening in my life. you are just watching people get ahead but are "too foggy" or not motivated. It's good initially to be clear and more coherent in conversations etc. after a few years not smoking, I got a few skin conditions and went through a period of living without friends basically. It turns out cannabis was helping that. plus the endless walking kept me fit.... I would say my body was good but mind was getting slow. Just realised some of the bad symptoms could have just been poly drug (alcohol and tobacco) withdrawals.

Yeah, same story here, everyday smoking weed and one day it just flipped upside down. Mixing weed with Psilocybin mushrooms didn't exactly help either. The thought of me going insane wouldn't leave my mind.
You wake up with it, you go to bed with it. Lasted for 2 months after quitting weed. At times it felt like my inner voice split into multiple voices. Always questioning what's real and what's not. Sometimes, out of mental fatigue I wanted to scream as loud as I can but always realised that it probably wouldn't help. I completely lost interest in everything and everyone around me. Probably the worst feeling I've ever experienced. I believe dopamine has got to do a lot with it. I'll admit that suicide thoughts did go through my mind, nothing too heavy but it was there in some form which was scary and unsettling.

If you are going through it right now, just remember that you are ok and you are not going crazy, it will pass eventually just be patient and stay positive in your mind. If you have to, come back and read this comment again.

I lived through a period where I had depersonalization. It was from taking minocycline which is a medication for acne. I was on it for too long and I also smoked a fair amount of weed at that point in my life. I was in school for audio engineering and I barely remember being there. I felt paranoid, like people didn't like me and would talk behind my back which I'm sure wasn't true unless I was coming off as weird from the depersonalization. The weirdest thing is that it really does feel like you're watching life rather than living it. It went away after a couple months of being off the medication. I stopped being able to enjoy weed for a long time because it would sort of make me feel that way after smoking it. Very strange experience. I thought I was losing my mind. 0/10 would not recommend.

This happened to me when I was younger. Lasted about 3 weeks. The best way I could describe it is not feeling like life is real, sort of like a dream but different. Weed is always down played to be this harmless thing and maybe the physical impact on your body might be less than alcohol. But I think the impact is has on your psychology is more dangerous than people realize. I smoked all day everyday for years with no issues other than an occational panic attack. Then one day this happened to me. The weed was not laced and I dought it was for post either.

As I get older more and more I appreciate the things that are good for me. Working hard on my career, the gym, and showing up the best I can in relationships. These are the things that lead to good life. Even a small amount of alcohol messes up my sleep and I tend to have wierd dreams. And times I would drink a lot I would do stupid things, sleep with sketchy women and take crazy risks. As you get a little older you start to see that these things are stupid. When you start loosing your health you realize it's everything.

I'm on day 8 a sobriety from Cannabis myself and I can actually tell the difference in Post Malone's demeanor, Clarity, speech pattern and everything versus him a couple years ago when he was probably smoking a lot of weed lol

I definitely had an unhealthy relationship with weed before addressing and treating my anxiety disorder. Now I do smoke a lot but it doesn’t feel forced. I’ll be busy and go without it for a while, if I get sick I don’t smoke, I don’t smoke if I have things to do…. Just since everyone sharing. I would say once I stopped medicating anxiety with weed and learning where/why I get anxious and how to deal with it.. and getting on meds for my mental health..it’s been a game changer. Also a big strain nerd and I do have strains I don’t touch because they make me feel poop

Thats insane the exact same thing happend to me. Smoked weed all the time one bad joint and i didnt feel like myself. I quit since then and it took me a few months to get over it but weed is dangerous stuff.

Went through the same. Smoked everyday, all day. Got so depressed and wanted to stop but i felt like a addiction to it. Felt like i was just watching a movie of my life instead of living it. When you smoke you get a shot of dopamine and will get addicted to that and it turns into a endless circle of realizing your not happy any more and when you wake up feeling the want to, to quit but quickly grab the pipe or bong cause you cant resist it.. and the weeks when i finally threw what I had left in the trash, was very very hard to get through..the huge emotional swings and depression and withdrawals sucked! But now its been 3 months and I'm feeling way better about myself and my life! If you feel the same way, trust me, just get rid of it and grind through the coming off part and things will get better. I promise!

This video and comments like yours have been really helpful to me. I've been sort of backseat driving my life the past few months, where nothing I do really makes me feel anything, and if it does it's meloncholic depression. I hadn't really thought about the fact that my weed use has significantly ramped up to where I can't even get high for more than minutes given how many times a day I smoke. The general disinterest I've had has really weighed on me, and I've hated myself for resenting the people around me because they don't understand and can't help. I think this coming into my recommended is a sign to ditch the rest of my weed and just live for a while. I'm glad you were able to get better, and think it's about time for me to as well

I’ve been sober from alcohol for almost 3 years , I would have bad anxiety and panic attacks on the days after I drank. Since I’ve stopped they have went away , sure I have some normal anxiety and stuff but no where near as when I drank . I also do meditation now, and some cbd oil here and there , I’m in a way better place off the Alcohol which is the social norm to be an alcoholic it seems . Good job post on no more weed I quit that shit when I was about 20 for the same reason , got some bad shit once and that was it for me lol

I am 45 years old. I like a little weed here and there, especially after a few beers, it helps me stop drinking for the night. I was daily pot smoker in my 20s and it often made me anxious AF. I quit for almost 10 years in my 30s. I think people are just taking too much. No need to be ripping bong hits or smoking blunts with the chronic. Just take a small hit or two, get lifted and enjoy your high.

This is how I smoke now. I can’t smoke weed by itself and nor can I smoke large quantities. I have a good evening with some drinks, maybe a few hits on a j and a couple more drinks and I feel pretty damn good. Weed alone is a big no no for me.

Its not just about smoking too much. I didn't even smoke that much. A lot of panic attacks come from anxiety and stress in life. Weed just highlights those problems more and can trigger a panic attack.

I quit smoking weed for a year to work on myself since I was dealing with panic attacks. I can confidentally say that I can smoke weed again without problems.

I totally agree. Also, people don't pay enough attention to the strains they are smoking. that, along with what Boardwalktoke mentions can lead to some bad experiences.

Dude I went through the same shit! At first it was fun but then it got too heavy and I changed. Experienced extreme derealization and depersonalization. I’ve been sober for about seven years now and I’m a totally different dude. Still perusing music tho, but I’m never imbibing in anything again. Some people aren’t built for it

Had it happen recently with a horrific acid trip, each day a little bit more of me comes back. Went from popping hydro's and qs and smoking 2 grams a day to the point even caffeine makes me go back into those little thought loops. It does get better, every second just remind yourself that this is from a bad drug experience, and i was not feeling this way before.

I had this same thing happen, doesn't matter what your friends say - if you're somebody with an bit of a creative/slightly crazy or adhd mind naturally stay away from doing too many drugs... It can f*k you up & did to me - had this same experience & am now coming out of it, almost 8 months in. But was sheer hell - do know though, that as long as you don't ever touch drugs again you will recover & feel normal again, and that it does 200% get better even when it feels like it can't, meditation & grounding excercises really help - if you're feeling it, it's highly likely because you've either just experience an mild drug-enduced psycotic episode, or (in most cases 90% of the time) are experiencing pretty severe anxiety. Do know though that as long as you stay away from all substances (alcohol's ok, but does give anxiety) then you will 100% feel better. You can get through this!

I’ve only quit smoking weed 1 time when I was in a 15-month juvenile program. After about 2 months of being home, the social pressure finally got to me. The first time I smoked, I got so high it felt like I was on an acid trip (and this was before ever doing acid). The initial anxiety/paranoia I felt was insane! I ran home and hid under my sheets - I was terrified! After that, I built a tolerance, and now I smoke every day, but every once in a while that same feeling of paranoia will come back to me.
So I’ve made up my mind. I have a 4 day weekend off work and I’m going to use it to quit smoking 🤞 I plan to go a whole year at least. Wish me luck!

EDIT: I attempted to quit smoking but failed the first time. I didn’t mention I was also addicted to cigarettes, so trying to quit both was rough. Although I failed in my original plan, all of your comments convicted me to try again! I decided to quit all nicotine, including blunts, a month ago and I’m still going strong! Today is Day 5 with no weed too!! Starting to get those crazy vivid dreams, and the urge is still there, but if it wasn’t for you guys asking about me I would probably still be smoking, so thank you everyone!!! 😊❤️

Goodluck man. I sometimes get really paranoid from weed as well when I smoke and start having existential crisis and freak myself out with deep thoughts about everything around me, even how my mind works lol. I want to quit soon as well, but it's been hard.

Hopefully it’ll inspire others who are daily potheads and feel like they need that break...I love my weed, but like any relationship, it can become abusive.

So many people have experienced the same issues.. I also deal with some panic attacks..but it's definitely getting better, just try to ignore them and simply breath..
Another thing that helps is when u solve stressful situations that initially caused those attacks. Gotta fix the way u look at things, love urself more, respect urself more. It's all in ur head!

I thought I was the only one but I see a lot of people have went through similar experiences. I’ve been smoking weed everyday since I was 17 I’m 20 now everytime I would smoke weed I would get more anxiety and paranoia than I would when I get sober. And I also constantly thought about smoking at my worst point I was smoking 8-10 joints a day Its all I would do I had no motivation to do anything not even in girls. My memory and attention span had gotten really bad as well as other things, I’ve tried to quit maybe 3 or 4 times in the past and I eventually went back to it. But I stopped this thanksgiving after catching the flu and honestly Ima make sure I never smoke weed again because it’s only been 5 days and I feel so much more better and alive and confident. I use to feel so numb before didn’t experience any happiness or sadness just emptiness.

Yup it's been two years and 3 months since my incredibly bad time from the same thing. Probably took 12-18 months to feel like 75% of myself again and slowly trending up with crappy days here and there. Staying away from seed oils, oddly, helps tremendously. I think that maybe the reason weed is becoming more and more legal is because they want as many people as possible to live afraid of themselves. A scared citizen is an obedient citizen. No more for me thanks.

The trip out part is beyond true. I would smoke daily for years, then one night- boom. Was convinced I was going to die, it was like one horrible bad trip. Ended up going to the ER for it. Havent smoked since. Crazy shit

I had a similar experience and have not been able to smoke and enjoy since and strange enough, my “bad weed trip” was also followed by severe anxiety - I found audio tapes from a guy in NZ who described that part as “feelings of unreality” where you limbs feel as if they don’t be belong to you. Weird. A$$. Sh*t

That’s how it started for me, my arms felt like they weren’t mine and I had to like keep checking them to make sure I was really alive. It’s fucking insane and I hate it, this happened after a panic attack from weed I’ve never smoked before idk if it was laced I doubt it was but I got sent to hell and never felt the same since.

I've had derealization for 38-39 years and it's non-stop. Not even for 10 seconds has it gone away. Not that I'm happy to see that someone may have it, but it is comforting to know that others have had it, and still may. Misery loves company I guess. Travis Barker's son was saying that he has it too. It's just such a disturbing feeling.
In my opinion, I think it very well may be that your soul leaves your body since you had experienced something which was traumatic FOR YOU, not necessarily for another person. It's a way of dealing with something that is so traumatic that u are unable to stay within the present moment as you cannot emotionally handle realizing that the experience really has just happened to you whether u accept it or not.

You’re better off sober, to realize your full potential. It’s empowering. A couple weeks ago I was sitting with my morning coffee, watching the news when I started suffering muscle spasms in my lower back and right leg. Then I became agitated and thought, well maybe if I try a toke or two I’ll calm down. Nope! It triggered a massive panic attack that lead to a 911 call, thinking I was suffering a stroke or heart attack. I’m 60 yrs. old and recently retired. I’ve suffered panic attacks years ago when I was under a lot of pressure on the job, but nothing like this. It took 2 1/2 hours for me to regain my calm again. So the doctor discharged me with some non-addictive anti-depressant/anxiety medicine and muscle relaxers. Thanks be to God. I won’t do that again.

I had my first experience with depersonalization after very bad shroom trip. For me the anxiety I have now is worst when I feel like I may lose control of my body or emotions. Any mind altering substance triggers a fear response if I can’t immediately get myself to “feel sober”.

I had a very bad trip after shrooms as well last year around July. Lasted for months, I didn’t finally start feeling myself again for almost an entire year. Went through an extreme panic attack (never had one before this) and ended up in the ER with the same panic attack 3 days later. After that, I had cyclic vomiting that occurred every two weeks or so with heavy chest/upper back pain and anxiety I couldn’t seem to budge. After therapy, taking a break from all substances (weed, vaping, drinking, etc.,) for a couple months, I finally got back into a better state of mind. Therapy definitely helped deal with emotions I was feeling and the anxiety I was constantly having. I got so caught up in not wanting to be in that state of mind that I was during that trip, and anything out of my daily routine would set me into a downward spiral so fast. I can say it did get better for me though, don’t be afraid to get help if you need it!

I’ve had that happen, the whole trippy out of your body thing (2-3 times ever). It happened like a month ago and it does have me a little fucked up. Almost like an Acid trip that provides sudden wisdom or a change of heart.

I used to smoke weed all day every day since I was 11. I had to stop around 27 because it started giving me bad anxiety and panic attacks. Once I quit smoking it, I then quit selling it. I learned a skill, got a good job doing said skill. Started a family and have healthy hobbies with friends that I don't just smoke weed with and drink with. All this happened within a couple years of quiting. I smoke once in a great while but my life is def better sober. I'm also able to focus better and I feel more cutout for everyday life. Weed was enabling me to be the person I no longer wanted to be. It's like I was watching my life happen haphazardly but, now I'm actually living my life. However, I still think weed is the safest drug there is and I think it can be a good thing if used correctly and discretly.

I got depersonalization 8 months after a whiplash, man I cried many nights wanting to go back to my normal me. The more research I do I feel this has to do with my neck injury. I’m seeing a Blair’s method chiropractor to undue my reverse neck curve and I’m seeing little improvements but that’s a good sign. Post Malone thanks for sharing your story man.

I’m contemplating quitting weed myself. It helped me get sober from alcohol but I feel like I’ve created a dependency with weed.
I drank heavy for 15 years and stopped. Was also doing heroin for 10 of those 15. I got over 3 years clean from alcohol now and then idk 4-5 year from drugs.
I bring that up cuz I’ve been fucked up since I was 14 on something. I might not drink or do hard drugs anymore but now I smoke weed like a lot.
I’m nervous about being bone sober. I don’t even know what that feels like.
