The group officially debuted on March 22, 2006 with a tripartite release of their debut album ("Best of KAT-TUN"), single ("Real Face") and DVD ("Real Face Film"), all of which topped the corresponding Oricon charts upon its release. "Real Face" went on to sell over a million copies by the end of the year and was named Japan's best-selling single of 2006. As of 2010, all of the group's releases (5 studio albums, 13 singles and 9 DVDs) have reached number one on the Oricon charts consecutively, making them only the third artist in Japanese music history to achieve this feat, after fellow Johnny's groups NEWS and KinKi Kids.
After Taguchi's departure, the group underwent for a "recharging period" of two years right after their 10th anniversary concert "10ks" endend. After two years the group came back releasing a new single "Ask Yourself"

The lyrics to KAT-TUN's song "BIRTH" talk about embarking on a journey into an endless world, searching for someone special. The first verse talks about leaving behind a certain place, unable to return, and beginning to walk forward with the goal of finding this person. The singer wonders what lies ahead and what tomorrow will bring, but is determined to find the meaning of their life and to believe in what they cherish. The chorus speaks of the pain and darkness (represented by "Hikari to Kage," or "Light and Shadow"), but also the chance encounters that make life worth living. Despite the difficulties, the singer vows to keep pushing forward and remembers their purpose for being born.
The second verse goes into more detail about the difficulty of believing in oneself and what they stand for. The singer has just realized how hard this can be, but still wants to pursue what they want without doubts. They long to meet the person they are looking for, despite the fact that they may have passed by unnoticed in the vast city.
