Out of This World
KING'S SINGERS / SHEARING Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

You're clear out of this world
When I'm looking at you,
I hear out of this world
The music that no mortal ever knew.

You're right out of a book,
The fairy tale I read when I was so high;
No armored knight out of a book
Could find a more enchanted Lorelei than I.

After waiting so long for the right time,
After reaching so long for a star,
All at once from the long and lonely night time,
And despite time, here you are!

I'd fly out of this world
If you said we were through,
So let me fly out of this world

And spend the next eternity or two with you;
I'll spend the next eternity or two with you.

Overall Meaning

These lyrics are about being completely enamored with someone and feeling like they are otherworldly or not of this world. The singer is so taken by this person that they hear music that is not of this world when they look at them. The person they are describing is also like a fairy tale character, the Lorelei, who is a siren or mermaid who lures sailors to their deaths with her song. The singer is essentially saying that they are willing to give up anything and everything just to be with this person for eternity.

The song "Out of This World" was written by Harold Arlen and Johnny Mercer in 1945 for the musical "Out of This World". It has since been covered by many artists including Tony Bennett, Ella Fitzgerald, and Nat King Cole. The version by King's Singers and George Shearing is a more contemporary arrangement, featuring vocal harmonies and a jazz piano accompaniment.
