The Walk
KITCHEN 1 - The Cure Lyrics

Then ran until I burst
I passed the howling woman
And stood outside your door
We walked around the lake
And woke up in the rain
And everyone turned over
Visiting time is over
And so we walk away
And both play dead then cry out loud
Why we always cry this way?
I kissed you in the water
And made your dry lips sing
I saw you look
Like a Japanese baby
In an instant I remembered everything, everything, everything
I called you after midnight
Then ran until my heart burst
I passed the howling woman
And stood outside your door
I kissed you in the water
And made your dry lips sing
I saw you look
Like a Japanese baby
In an instant I remembered everything, everything, everything
Take me for a walk
Take me for a walk
Let's go in the water
Take me for a walk
The lyrics of The Cure's song The Walk are enigmatic yet meaningful. The song appears to be about a love affair or a romantic relationship between two people who haven't been able to express their feelings. The narrative follows a phone call made by the singer after midnight to his partner, followed by his sprinting to her house. This phone call appears to have been long overdue, and the joy of finally being able to see her is nothing short of exhilarating.
The first verse talks about how the singer runs to his lover's house, and during his dash, he passes by a howling woman. The imagery here suggests a state of frenzy or desperation, as if the singer is consumed with his love for his partner. In the second verse, the couple goes on a walk around the lake, and they wake up to the sound of rain. The rain here could symbolize their emotional turbulence or their passion. As they walk past troubled sleeping individuals, the lyrics reveal that their love appears to disturb the dreams of others.
The next verse discusses how a much-awaited visit is now over, and they both have to return to their lives. The singers play dead, indicating that their love is a secret, and they can't express it openly. They cry out loud because of the pain of not being able to share their true feelings. In the final verse, the two kiss, and the singer experiences an epiphany. He remembers everything about his past with his partner, including the shared moments and emotions.

This song takes me on a journey every time. Strange and wonderful, sometimes dark, but always the right places.

It blows my mind that this was recorded in 1979. Released in 80. They were SO PROGRESSIVE. So wildly before their time. Takes me back to the best times in my life. An age of cool, innocence. I was a misfit of a girl, with misfit friends. But we knew. We knew what the rest of them didn't. We knew THIS.
