automobile
Kaleo Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

Imagine myself in an automobile
A hundred miles an hour, only me at the wheel
I want it to shine, to be only mine
The engine has to be just one of a kind

How many dollars do I need sir?
You know I sure don't have a lot
There must be something we can work out
Well, I'll take it anyway

I guess I could make room for one, a bottle of rum
You and me together riding into the sun
Live without care, with the wind in my hair
I'm driving through the desert, yeah I'll go anywhere

Take me where the wheels take me, far away
Wheels take me, I can't stay
Wheels take me, any place today

Imagine myself in an automobile
A hundred miles an hour, if you know how I feel
Alone with my mind, leave my worries behind
Might even reach the border, it's just a matter of time, yeah now!

I said take me where the wheels take me, far away
Wheels take me, I can't stay
Wheels take me, any place today

Oh I'm going to San Diego, here I come
San Francisco, won't be long
Sacramento, whoa yeah, in the sun
I just might go

Oh, I said I'm going to San Diego (San Diego) and San Jose
San Fransisco (San Fransisco) and hang by the bay
Sacramento (Sacramento), whoa, yeah all the way

I just might go all the way to Mexico
I just might go all the way down to Mexico

Overall Meaning

In "Automobile," Kaleo paints a vivid picture of his desire to hit the road and leave his troubles behind, accompanied by only his car, a bottle of rum, and the open road. The first verse sets the scene with him imagining himself behind the wheel, driving at breakneck speed. He wants the car to be unique and special, just like him. In the second verse, he approaches a car dealer despite not having a lot of money, hoping to strike a deal. He decides to make do with what he has and even offers to bring a bottle of rum on the journey. The chorus expresses his yearning to let the path he travels lead him wherever it may, with no destination in mind, only the journey.

In the third verse, Kaleo doubles down on his desire to leave everything behind as he finds himself caught in his own thoughts, searching for a way to escape. The repetition of the chorus highlights the driving desire Kaleo feels to leave, as he lists off possible destinations, ranging from San Diego to Sacramento, and all the way down to Mexico.

I never thought I would ever like this type of music

@dash0173

right? it's like borderline country and i really dont like country but this is really really good

@PocketPrincesses13

+adza botchway it's not even country music..

@dash0173

Sydney talbot i know. i said it's "borderline" country because it definitely is

@colbyjcobain8282

Dude its blues or blues rock. Country doesn't sound like this

@killbotfelwick

It's not country music because its not a guy singing about how his woman left him in the dirt and its not a girl singing about how her man is a loser so she left him. That's the country music test.
