In 2007 while preparing to be a singer, she was also studying English literature at university. At the time she met Australian duo Nervo, who offered Nishino a song called "I Don't Wanna Know" for use in her music project. Nishino rewrote the song's lyrics into Japanese herself, and re-titled it I.
In December 2007 her official site opened, and from that time onwards *I* ~Merry Christmas ver.~ was available as a digital download from several Japanese sites, including mora.jp. The original version of the song I Don't Wanna Know was available as a digital download on the American iTunes from New Years' Day onwards. The physical version was released two months later, on the 20th of February.

You know that I love you
But I can't hide
Your lustrous side
Where I love you
She wants your history
And never believe you
Here I am now stand
Swimming now deep in the sea over my ocean
All I can see is her face
Bearing this because you're dropping in lust
Scared of the reason, I say
So I don't wanna know If you're thinking about her
I don't wanna know I don't wanna get hurt
I don't wanna know cause I know enough to know
That I don't wanna know if you have any regrets
Don't wanna know if she's hard to forget
I don't wanna know cause I know enough to know
That I don't want to know
I don't want to know
When did you fall for her
What made her so special
Now I try to get love
But my frustrations now going away
I know that it's in the past
Baby, I know a girl
You know that I love you
But I can't hide
Your lustrous side
Where I love you
She wants your history
And never believe you
For I can't face more than second place
Here I am now stand
Swimming now deep in the sea over my ocean
All I can see is her face
Bearing this because you're dropping in lust
Scared of the reason, I say
So I don't wanna know If you're thinking about her
I don't wanna know I don't wanna get hurt
I don't wanna know cause I know enough to know
That I don't wanna know if you have any regrets
Don't wanna know if she's hard to forget
I don't wanna know cause I know enough to know
That I don't want to know
I don't want to know
When did you fall for her
What made her so special
Now I try to get love
But my frustrations now going away
I know that it's in the past
But isn't that simple
You said you've had you're first
And like that goes
That'll never change
Swimming now deep in the sea over my ocean
All I can see is her face
Bearing this because you're dropping in lust
Scared of the reason, I say
So I don't wanna know If you're thinking about her
I don't wanna know I don't wanna get hurt
I don't wanna know cause I know enough to know
That I don't wanna know if you have any regrets
Don't wanna know if she's hard to forget
I don't wanna know cause I know enough to know
That I don't want to know
I don't want to know
Does she
Kissed where I do?
Or does she
Some mysterious room tonight
So I don't wanna know If you're thinking about her
I don't wanna know don't wanna get hurt
I don't wanna know cause I know enough to know
That I don't wanna Know if you have any regrets
Don't wanna know if she's hard to forget
I don't wanna know cause I know enough to know
That I don't want to know
I don't want to know
Baby I know a girl
You know that I love you
The lyrics to Kana Nishino's "I Don't Wanna Know" express a fear of the unknown and the pain that comes with loving someone who is still stuck in their past. The song opens with the singer admitting that she knows a girl, hinting us to assume the girl is the one her lover is thinking about. She expresses her love for her lover but can't help but be haunted by the memory of his past. The singer is aware of her lover's "lustrous side" and the girl's desire to know his history, which causes her to doubt her place in his heart. She's scared to lose him and feels like she's drowning in the sea of her own emotions, as he's dropping in lust. The singer, therefore, chooses to remain in the dark and ignore any thoughts about the girl. She'd rather not get hurt and not know anything that might cause her pain.
The pre-chorus implies a deeper insecurity and fear. The singer is scared that the girl will replace her entirely and take away what she treasures the most. She can't help but wonder about the girl and the extent of their involvement. She's haunted by the possibility that the girl might be more attractive, better suited for him and that he will eventually move on to her.
The chorus of the song iterates that the singer doesn't want to know anything about the girl. She doesn't want to know if he still pines for her or has any regrets. She doesn't want to know if she's hard to forget because she knows that any knowledge in this regard will only hurt her. The song ends with the singer reminding her lover that she loves him, despite her fears and insecurities.
