It's Over
Kanye West Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

I don't wanna be what you want me to be
So when I call, you're just yelling at me
I'm sorry it's my fault
It's over

Now what do you keep calling for? (For)
(What do you keep calling for?)
It's over (what do you keep calling for?)
It's over (what do you keep calling for?)

Now what do you keep calling for? (For)
(What do you keep calling for?)
It's over (what do you keep calling for?)
It's over (what do you keep calling for?)
It's over

In the back of my mind I question why I keep calling
I guess I'm just used to getting my way, I'm spoiled
I don't wanna be what you want me to be (don't wanna be)
So when I call, you're just yelling at me (oh, yeah)
I'm sorry it's my fault
Oh, the clothes I bought you can still wear (still wear)
Did you store the cards and teddy bears? (Ooh, yeah)
See, there I go again sticking my nose
I'm sorry it's my fault (hey, hey, hey, hey)

Now what do you keep calling for? (For)
(What do you keep calling for?)
It's over (what do you keep calling for?)
It's over (what do you keep calling for?)
Don't you know that it's

Now what do you keep calling for? (For, yeah)
(What do you keep calling for?)
It's over (what do you keep calling for?)
It's over (what do you keep calling for?) (Yeah, yeah)
It's over

Girl, talking to myself in the mirror is strange enough (strange enough)
So you gotta know sharing this with you is painful, yeah (painful, ayy-ohh)
You know we used to talk about our future
It ain't just all my fault (I know, I know, I know we used to talk about it, babe)
So say goodbye to the way the leaves would fall (leaves would fall, leaves would fall)
The way we stand in the rain and we would bawl (we would cry)
Just say goodbye
To the walks and talks and the dark in the park
And it ain't just all my fault (hey, hey, hey, hey, yeah)

Now what do you keep calling for? (For)
(What do you keep calling for?) Oh
It's over (what do you keep calling for?)
It's over (what do you keep calling for?) (Over)

Now what do you keep calling for? (For)
(What do you keep calling for?) Don't you know that it's over, yeah
It's over (what do you keep calling for?)
It's over (what do you keep calling for?) (Over)
It's over

We lost a four leaf clover
Don't ask why shorty be over
Newsflash shorty we over
We like Def Jam and Hova
We like Bobby and Whitney
Except without the kiddies
Like Pamela Anderson's career
Except without the titties
We had some good times, didn't we?
I know I won't forget that
But we had some bad times and
That's time I wish I could get back
We coulda had it all
But I guess we'll never know
(You been around me long enough to know me)
You been around me long enough
To know that now it's over (it's over, girl)

What do you keep calling for? (For)
(What do you keep calling for?) (Woo)
It's over (what do you keep calling for?)
It's over (what do you keep calling for?) (Hey, uh)

Now what do you keep calling for? (For)
(What do you keep calling for?)
It's over (what do you keep calling for?)
It's over (what do you keep calling for?) (Yeah)
It's over

It's nothing we can do with it (what do you keep calling for?)
So we might as well forget it (what do you keep calling for?)
Like we never ever did it (what do you keep calling for?)
Oh, it's over (what do you keep calling for?)

Nothing we can do with it (what do you keep calling for?)
So we might as well forget it (what do you keep calling for?)
Like we never ever did it (what do you keep calling for?)
Oh, hey (what do you keep calling for?)

Nothing we can do with it (what do you keep calling for?)
So we might as well forget it (what do you keep calling for?)
Like we never ever did it (what do you keep calling for?)
Ohh (what do you keep calling for?)

It's nothing we can do with it (what do you keep calling for?)
So we might as well forget it (what do you keep calling for?)

Like we never ever did it (what do you keep calling for?)
Ohh, hey, yeah (what do you keep calling for?)

Overall Meaning

The song "It's Over" by Kanye West, John Legend, and Pharrell is a breakup song about the end of a relationship between two people who are not on the same page anymore. The lyrics are filled with a sense of finality and regret, as the singer realizes that they are not meant to be together anymore.

The opening lines of the song, "I don't wanna be what you want me to be, so when I call, you're just yelling at me," suggest that the relationship has reached a point of conflict and anger. The singer is no longer willing to be someone they are not in order to please their partner. They acknowledge their mistakes, admitting that it's their fault that the relationship is over, but they also ask why their ex keeps calling them. The repetition of the refrain "what do you keep calling for?" further emphasizes the finality of the breakup and the need to move on.

In the second verse, the singer questions their own actions, admitting that they may be used to getting their way and being spoiled. They also mention material possessions, such as clothes and teddy bears, suggesting that they may have been focused on superficial things rather than the deeper emotional connection between them. The verse ends with a sense of regret, as the singer laments their own mistakes and apologizes.

Overall, "It's Over" is a powerful and emotional breakup song that captures the pain and regret that come with the end of a relationship.

@rub23n

Johnny boy probably got really mad and pulled this from streaming. Or sample clearance issues

@dday906

Why this song was never released on the radio, I'll never know. This is one of John Legend's best songs, one of my favorite Kanye verses ever, and Pharrell working his magic on the music, as always.

@mattewebb1531

I remember this song came out when I was 10 years old and I didn’t know what to do with myself. John legend really helped teach me how to sing with vibrato throughout my childhood. All of a sudden I just remembered this song out of the back of my mind and got so excited I had to come find it here, really hadn’t heard it in years .Still gives me the same feeling it gave me as a kid.

@theshadowplex

This song aged amazingly, there are comments about how great it is from so many different years on this video!
