You Don't Know My Name
Kanye West Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

Yo, yo, DJ Offbeat
Remember, I'm gone, up down under
I might trip yeah, um
She look, she look good as a motherfucker
But I can’t remember her name for nothing
Yo, you took down her number?
You wrote down number her, right?
I'm puttin' it
Dawg, I’ma just go ahead and call this girl
Hello, what's up? It's Kanye
Nah, it's really me you know who I am?
I don't usually do this but
I'm only going to be in town for one night
I want to know if you want to
Come by the room or something
Would that be cool?
I'm thinking 'bout it right now, don’t worry
Ok, cool, cool i’ll pick you up
Come around
Ok, let me, let me take your coat
Um, you think I'll get you
A massage or something, at least?
Ok, what’s up? Ok, ok, that felt good
What I'm trying to say, what I mean
What's up what's up with me and you?
I’m saying, um when we, uh
Wait a second, you can't do nothin'
It's that time of the month oh, man
Why you tell me?
I ain't saying that's all on board
I'm just saying why you tellin' me
But we gotta figure out something
Uh, um, oh yes some hair will be perfect

And it feels like wooo, ooh, ooh
But I still don't know your name
Round and round and round she goes
She be goin' close i swear it felt like
Wooo, ooh, ooh
But I still don't know your name

Round and round and round she goes
She be goin' close

Overall Meaning

The lyrics of Kanye West's song "You Don't Know My Name" tell the story of a chance encounter with a woman that Kanye is physically attracted to, but cannot remember her name. The song begins with a conversation between Kanye and DJ Offbeat, where Kanye expresses his attraction towards this woman. Kanye mentions that he cannot recall her name, despite finding her very attractive.

Kanye then contemplates calling her and invites her to his hotel room, indicating that he will only be in town for one night. The lyrics include dialogue between Kanye and the woman, where they exchange pleasantries and flirtatious banter. However, the woman then reveals that it is the time of the month (referring to her menstrual cycle), which seemingly disappoints Kanye. He questions why she told him, implying that it hampers his intentions for their encounter.

Despite this setback, Kanye suggests finding an alternative activity, such as getting a massage. The lyrics conclude with Kanye expressing his desire for physical intimacy, remarking that hair will be perfect. The song combines Kanye's attraction to this woman with his frustration at not knowing her name, culminating in a seductive and flirtatious narrative.

When I was listening to this beautiful tune and I thought to myself damn this sounds too good to be true for today’s music it sounds like the music from the 70s, sure enough it’s a cover from the main ingredients let me prove my love to you... no disrespect to Alicia, but thank God we had real music back in the 70s!!!!!

Kanye is a Genius

Fine Feathered Friend

I admit I was not feeling Alicia Keys at all on her first record. I felt she was just sooo overhyped and most of us hadn’t gotten over Aaliyah. But as soon as I heard You Don’t Know My Name I had to give props.

I remember exactly where I was when I first heard it and I was literally like 😳. Ain’t never questioned this woman’s talent since and it’s still my absolute favorite song from her and Diary a close second👌, then Doesn’t Mean Anything.

Oriane Asmore

I can relate to that song so much! Delta like this so many times. You can be the prettiest girl but there is that one guy who just doesn't notice you. Yet other men do.

Messiah Black
