Her mother is Korean and father is Polish. She grew up in New Jersey, went to Dwight-Englewood high school, and attended Oberlin College, but transferred to New York University's Tisch School of the Arts.
Orzolek has been noted for her sense of fashion. All of her costumes are designed by fashion designer and friend Christian Joy. She is also well known for her outrageous antics during live shows. She is known to often spit water or beer, or sometimes grapes into the crowd. Her on-stage antics have been compared to punk legends like Iggy Pop and Patti Smith. In 2003 at The Metro, Sydney, Australia (prior to the Yeah Yeah Yeahs' appearance at the Livid festival), she accidentally danced off the stage at a sideshow and reluctantly had to be taken to hospital - a few days later she appeared at the festival in a wheelchair, pushed by Angus Andrew.
She currently lives in Los Angeles, California, in the Silver Lake neighbourhood.

The worst is gonna come out slow
Cold let her walk away
Young never love again
Callin' out your world of pain
Lone who will stop the world
I don't know, I don't know
I won't grow
Cold let him walk away
Young never love again
Callin' out your world of pain
Lone who will stop the world
I don't know, I don't know
I want, I want, I want to know
I can't, I can't, I can't hold
Any, any, any soul
I can't, I can't, I can't hold
Any, any, any soul
Karen O's song "Visits" conveys the theme of the fear of vulnerability and the pain that comes along with it. The first verse of the song repeats the line "The worst is gonna come out slow," giving the impression that Karen is anticipating the end of a relationship, and the emergence of the worst possible version of herself during the breakup. She is reluctant to allow herself to be vulnerable enough to love again, as indicated with the line "Young never love again." The song then goes on to describe the pain of calling out another's "world of pain" and being a "lone" person who feels as though they can do nothing to stop it. Karen then emphasizes her difficulty in expressing her emotions with the lines "I don't know, I don't know / I won't grow / The words are gonna come out slow."
The second verse repeats this imagery, but with a different perspective. Instead of fearing her own vulnerability, she is expressing the pain of seeing someone else walk away from her. With the line "Cold let him walk away," Karen suggests that the person leaving is doing so without concern for her feelings. She is left alone to contemplate how to move on from the hurt, as she looks for someone who can "stop the world." She ends the verse expressing her emotional confusion, with the lines "I want, I want, I want to know / I can't, I can't, I can't hold / Any, any, any soul."
Overall, "Visits" is a poignant portrayal of the pain of failed relationships, fear of vulnerability, and emotional paralysis that often follows heartbreak.
