Long way home
Kasey Anderson Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

She woke me up
With the radio playing
Some heartbroke song
I swear I used to know
She said, "ain't you tired
Of blaming fate
For this desperate line
That we've been hangin' on"
I said, "luck
Is such a funny little thing
Never comes around
As easy as it goes
And we're alright tonight
But it's a long way home"

I remember you
In your daddy's arms
Looking back at me
Through a crowd of hopeful souls
And now here we are
Two old and charmless fools
Fear and failure burnin' down the road
And there ain't much
Left of us
But the flesh and blood
That twists around our bones
That oughta be enough
But it's a long way home

There's an ancient storm
On the rise tonight
Gonna clear the sky
And strip the earth bare
'Til there's nothing left
But you and me
And whatever's waiting
In the darkness out there
It's a cold, hard ride
But, honey, it ain't easy
If you're out there
On your own

Stay by my side
'Cause it's a long way home

Overall Meaning

In Kasey Anderson's "Long Way Home," the singer finds themselves in a rather bleak state- in a relationship that has turned stale, and nothing seems to be quite working out. The song begins with the singer being woken up by his significant other, with the radio playing a song that reminds him of his past- a song he used to know. His partner asks him whether he thinks blaming fate is an easy way out of their problems. The singer, however, responds by saying that luck is not something that comes easy, and even though things might be fine between them now, the road ahead is going to be rough.

In the second verse, the singer looks back at his life- to the time when he saw his partner in her father's arms for the first time. Things have changed since then, and the only thing that remains is the "flesh and blood that twists around their bones." But despite everything, the singer is willing to fight and make it work, even if it's a cold, hard ride. The last verse speaks of an upcoming storm- a metaphor for the difficulties that lie ahead. In spite of it, the singer urges his partner to stick by his side, for it's going to be a long way home.
