Cloudbusting
Kate Bush's Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

I still dream of Orgonon
I wake up crying
You're making rain
And you're just in reach
When you and sleep escape me

You're like my yo-yo
That glowed in the dark
What made it special
Made it dangerous
So I bury it
And forget

But every time it rains
You're here in my head
Like the sun coming out
Ooh, I just know that something good is gonna happen
I don't know when
But just saying it could even make it happen

On top of the world
Looking over the edge
You could see them coming
You looked too small
In their big, black car
To be a threat to the men in power

I hid my yo-yo
In the garden
I can't hide you
From the government
Oh, God, daddy
I won't forget

'Cause every time it rains
You're here in my head
Like the sun coming out
Ooh, I just know that something good is gonna happen
I don't know when
But just saying it could even make it happen, ohh

And every time it rains
You're here in my head
Like the sun coming out
Look, your son's coming out
Ooh, I just know that something good is gonna happen
I don't know when
But just saying it could even make it happen, ohh

Ooh, just saying it could even make it happen

Yeah-yeah-yeah-ohh
We're cloudbusting, daddy
Yeah-yeah-yeah-yo
Yeah-yeah-yeah-ohh
Yeah-yeah-yeah-yo
Yeah-yeah-yeah-ohh

Your sun's coming out

Yeah-yeah-yeah-ohh
Your son's coming out

Overall Meaning

The lyrics to Kate Bush's song Cloudbusting are full of references to Wilhelm Reich and his theories on orgone energy. In the first verse, Kate sings "I still dream of orgonon", which was the name of the laboratory that Reich built to study orgone energy. The song is inspired by Reich's relationship with his son, Peter, and the invention they made together called the cloudbuster, which is referenced in the chorus.

The second verse describes Kate's yo-yo, which she compares to the invention made by Reich and Peter. Both were special and dangerous, and so she buried her yo-yo and forgot about it. She also describes how every time it rains, she thinks of Reich and his work with the cloudbuster, and how she believes that saying something good could even make it happen.

The third verse brings in political themes as Kate describes a scene where she and Reich are on top of the world, looking over the edge and watching the men in power approach. She has hidden her yo-yo in the garden, but she can't hide Reich from the government. The chorus repeats, emphasizing the hope that Kate has for something good to happen.

Overall, the song seems to be about the relationship between a father and son, as well as the hope that people can have for change in the face of oppressive power. The references to Reich and his theories on orgone energy may seem obscure to some listeners, but they add depth and meaning to the lyrics.
