Oxygen
Katie Kleiger Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

She rolls up her sleeves as she enters
The bar that she’s been to
A million times
As her head overflows
With everything
She was born from the cracks in the sidewalk below
She steps careful not to show
That despite all the time she’s
Not sure of anything
Don’t you need air
There’s no oxygen there
Down below
A mural is forming inside of the glass
That she sips from
Awaiting the moment he asks
For more
More of everything
Outside the streets are emptying out
She’s running out of things to doubt
The walls caving in shutting out
everything
And I said
Don’t you need air
There’s no oxygen there
Down below
Don’t you need air
There’s no oxygen there
Down below
She opens the window and stretches her body
Outside as far as it goes
Looking up at the blue
Wishing everything
The wind blows the tune did you know that
The sky that you see is the same sky as me
Hoping maybe this thought
Fixes everything

Don’t you need air
There’s no oxygen there
Down below (repeated)
Reaching my hand out

Come back to this land
From below

Overall Meaning

The song "Oxygen" by Katie Kleiger tells a story of a woman who is struggling with the overwhelming thoughts and doubts inside her head. As she enters a familiar bar, she is weighed down by everything she was born out of, and she tries to hide her uncertainty as she waits for someone to ask for more from her. The emptying streets outside reflect her feeling of being shut out, her world caving in. The chorus "Don’t you need air, There’s no oxygen there, Down below" is a plea for her to seek a way out of the suffocating feeling of being trapped. She opens the window and stretches her body, wishing for a solution to fix everything. The song ends with a plea to come back to this land, implying that the woman has been disconnected from reality and needs to reconnect.

Hello! I saw you on a Seinfeld Extra show on Hulu. "Wow, she's adorable," I thought. Your name shows up in the credits, so I Googled you and was delighted to find that you're an actor/musician. Your lovely face and dynamite smile are among your (numerous) great attributes, so the only thing missing from this sweet video is a few close-ups. You might mention your Seinfeld credit on your web page. It can't hurt, (can it?) and it might help you reach a few more fans from among his many millions. Here's hoping to see much more of your work in the future.
