Fields Of Gold
Keali'i Reichel Lyrics

You'll remember me when the west wind moves upon the fields of barley
You'll forget the sun in his jealous sky as we walk in fields of gold
So she took her love for to gaze awhile upon the fields of barley
In his arms she fell as her hair came down among the fields of gold

Will you stay with me, will you be my love among the fields of barley?
We'll forget the sun in his jealous sky as we lie in fields of gold
See the west wind move like a lover so upon the fields of barley.
Feel her body rise when you kiss her mouth among the fields of gold

I never made promises lightly and there have been some that I've broken
But I swear in the days still left we'll walk in fields of gold
We'll walk in fields of gold

Many years have passed since those summer days among the fields of barley
See the children run as the sun goes down among the fields of gold
You'll remember me when the west wind moves upon the fields of barley

You can tell the sun in his jealous sky when we walked in fields of gold
When we walked in fields of gold, when we walked in fields of gold

Overall Meaning

Keali'i Reichel's rendition of "Fields of Gold" captures the essence of songwriter Sting's love ballad. The lyrics play on the image of walking through fields of golden barley, where the west wind moves tenderly and the sun no longer casts a jealous glow. The first verse speaks about the everlasting imprint the singer will leave on his lover's memory, every time she walks through the fields. This is emphasized in the fourth line, where he sings how she fell into his arms in the surging breeze with her hair let loose, where the only sound is that of the ripening crops swaying underfoot.

The second verse adds an element of romanticism to the song as the singer asks his lover if she will stay with him and be his love as they lay among the fields of barley. He sings of forgetting the sun's jealous sky, just as the wind moves like a lover sweeping the crops, and his lover's body reacts to his gentle touch as they kiss in the golden fields.

The final verse speaks of how the lovers' time together has passed amidst the fields; how they now profile new lives surrounded by their offspring. The song ends with the assurance that even as time ticks away, the singer expects his loving memory will play on his lover's mind, marking the times they walked in fields of gold.

Overall, Keali'i Reichel's performance of "Fields of Gold" shows a man deeply in love who wants to immortalize those moments in the fields with his love.

This was one of my mom's favorite songs. And we played it at her funeral. And whenever life gets a little hard to handle, listening to it brings me to tears and simultaneously provides me the strength to overcome whatever I'm worrying about.

While staying in Princeville on Kauai, I got up real early one morning as the sun was just starting to show it's light on the peaks outside of Hanalei Town. I drove down that little two lane road from Princeville to get breakfast in Hanalei. This song came up as I turned on the CD in the car. One of the greatest drives and music (and view) in my life. We also purchased a DVD of one of this man's concerts in Honolulu. Keali'i thank you for sharing your culture with all of us! Mahalo!

I heard him on the stereo in a restaurant on my first visit to Maui. I didn't know who it was, so I went into a record store in the same mall and it was ALL Hawaiian music in there. The woman knew exactly who he was and turned me on to his music. His music is so soothing and healing.
