No No No
Ken Thompson And Slow/Fast Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

I grit teeth for the longest time
I bruised lips in a mouth that wasn’t mine
I couldn’t wait for the stars to shine
I am a child inside my mind
With all the weight of the bags beneath my eyes
I couldn’t tell that I’d crossed the line
I make my promises, and break them as I go
It’s okay to be alone
When it’s the only thing you know
And it’s you
You’d start a fire at the end of the world
You’d give it all to stay and watch it burn
You know I’ve said it all before, but it’s way too soon
And it’s true
You know that every little thing that I do
Just goes to show how much I’ve got to prove
The more you care, the more you’ve got to lose
But that’s no excuse
I couldn’t wait for the cold to come
The older part of me hates the summer months
They never seem to give out as much as they did
But as August turns to December
The only thing I can remember
Is writing songs for chances I’ve missed
Don’t be one of them – it’s easier to stay
Well, it’s easier for me
And that’s all that matters, anyway
And it’s you
You’d start a fire at the end of the world
You’d give it all to stay and watch it burn
You know I’ve said it all before, but it’s way too soon
And it’s true
You know that every little thing that I do
Just goes to show how much I’ve got to prove
The more you care, the more you’ve got to lose
But that’s no excuse
I can’t speak cos I know that it won’t make any difference, now
Before you go, take a second and just hear me out
Before you burn your bridges
Won’t you bear in mind those wishes that you made
When it was us against the day
And it’s you
You’d start a fire at the end of the world
You’d give it all to stay and watch it burn
You know I’ve said it all before, but it’s way too soon
And it’s true
You know that every little thing that I do
Just goes to show how much I’ve got to prove
The more you care, the more you’ve got to lose

But that’s no excuse
But that's no excuse

Overall Meaning

The lyrics of ”No no no” by Ken Thomson and Slow/Fast delve into themes of isolation, self-doubt, and the fear of loss. The opening lines “I grit teeth for the longest time, I bruised lips in a mouth that wasn't mine” paint a picture of tension and discomfort. The singer is dealing with immense pressure, and their internal struggle is manifesting itself in physical ways. They can't wait for things to improve, for the stars to shine, but they are still stuck in darkness. They feel like a child inside their mind, burdened with the weight of the bags under their eyes.

The chorus of the song is the most powerful and impactful. It talks about the singer’s relationship with someone who gives their all to start a fire, at the end of the world, to watch it burn. Although the singer has stated their commitment earlier, it is too early for them to follow through on it. The more they care about something, the more they have to lose, and that’s no excuse to leave everything. They reminisce about missed opportunities and writing lyrics for chances they couldn't take. However, it's easier for them to stay alone than risk losing someone.

The bridge of the song is a desperate plea from the singer, asking the other person to listen to them before they burn their bridges. They ask them to remember the wishes they made together and not forget the promise they had to each other when it was "us against the day." Thus, "No no no" is a song that speaks to the complexities of relationships and the challenges of committing oneself fully to another person.

This is the most interesting 1 hour on YouTube I've had in years. Ken Thomposon is a fantastic storyteller!

Whateverworks.

Agreed, this is the best hour I've spent on YouTube for a while. On a site note, in case you're interested, the YouTube channel "Computerphile" regularly features videos with Brian Kernighan. Unfortunately Ken has yet to make an appearance but Brian has a dozen videos or so.

I didn’t know when I spent over 1hr watching and enjoying the tales of how UNIX which eventually gave birth to the likes of LINUX came about.

I was glad that I could still comprehend some of the technical topics he glazed over, since I left university.

No doubt! I wish they would have had like a follow-up session with more stories. Or that they would have extended the session.

He was brilliant, but to himself I think he thought he was kind of "dumb or average". Little did he know at the time; though, He co-created a language that would stand the test of time and be used as a base language for a lot of things in CS.

@Gravy 1255 He is a man of integrity and what he thought about himself is honest. He isn't dumb but average which is not to discredit him, but the popularity of what he did is explained simply by the fact that there are many dumb and average poeople around. And those dumb and average people can comprehend what he did and simply ignored other much more brighter people in the field.

@knyazhe films He isn't average. Lol.
