I'm Alive
Kenny Chesney With Dave Matthews Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

So damn easy to say that life′s so hard
Everybody's got their share of battle scars
As for me, I′d like to thank my lucky stars
That I'm alive and well

It'd be easy to add up all the pain
And all the dreams you sat and watched go up in flames
Dwell on the wreckage as it smolders in the rain
But not me, I′m alive

And today you know that′s good enough for me
Breathin' in and out′s a blessing, can't you see?
Today′s the first day of the rest of my life
And I'm alive and well
I′m alive and well

Stars are dancin' on the water here tonight
It's good for the soul when there′s not a soul in sight
This boat has caught its wind and brought me back to life
Now I′m alive and well

And today you know that's good enough for me
Breathing in and out′s a blessing, can't you see?
Today′s the first day of the rest of my life

Now I'm alive and well
Yeah, I′m alive and well

Overall Meaning

The song "I'm Alive" by Kenny Chesney with Dave Matthews is a celebration of life and a reminder to appreciate the small blessings that we often overlook. The song opens with the realization that everyone has their own struggles and pain, but despite it all, the singer feels grateful to be alive and well. He doesn't dwell on his past or the negative aspects of life, but instead chooses to focus on the present moment and the beauty that surrounds him.

The chorus repeats the sentiment that being alive is enough and a blessing in and of itself. The second verse speaks to the idea that life is unpredictable and can be full of unexpected twists and turns. However, the singer finds solace in the simple pleasures of life, such as being able to breathe and enjoy the stars on a quiet night.

The song ultimately concludes with a sense of renewal and hope. The boat that the singer is on has "caught its wind" and brought him back to life. He affirms that he is alive and well, no matter what has happened in the past or what may come in the future. The message of the song is one of appreciation for life and the importance of being present in the moment.

My Mom passed away and I took it hard. I hadn't talked or listened to TV or radio for 3 days. On way home from Funeral Home I turned on my car radio. This song was playing and it floored me. I had never heard it but Mom was speaking straight to me. It got me through and I still can't listen to it without crying. I will never forget it. Beautiful!!!
